OBITUARY

Valentine Shashoua, beloved mother, grandmother, and matriarch, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, at the age of 90.

Born on December 17, 1935, in Baghdad, Iraq, Valentine lived a life defined by courage, resilience, family, and deep devotion to the Jewish people. In 1948, amid rising persecution of Iraqi Jews, she fled with her family to Iran. A proud and devout Zionist, she later moved with her family to Israel in 1951, embracing the dream of a Jewish homeland during the young nation’s earliest years.

In 1961, Valentine immigrated to the United States with her beloved husband, Dr. Nadhum Shashoua. Together, they built a remarkable life rooted in hard work, generosity, faith, and family. She and her husband helped pave the way for many family members to come to America and build better futures.

Gifted with warmth, intelligence, and extraordinary cultural fluency, Valentine spoke five languages and connected effortlessly with people from all walks of life. She was known for her infectious laugh, vibrant spirit, and unmatched hospitality.

Nothing brought Valentine more joy than gathering her family around the table. She was a tremendous cook who specialized in Iraqi cuisine and lovingly hosted holidays and Shabbat lunches that became treasured family traditions. Her t’bit was legendary and remains a favorite requested by generations of family members.

Above all, Valentine was a devoted and loving mother to Ezra, Iris, George, and Abe, and a deeply cherished grandmother to Zach, Cole, Lila, Nathan, Sally, Ned, Jonathon, Jacob, and Nathaniel. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by her siblings Edward, Clara and Ronit. Her wisdom, strength, humor, and unconditional love shaped the lives of all who knew her.

Valentine’s journey from Baghdad to Iran, Israel, and ultimately America reflected both the hardship and triumph of an extraordinary generation. Her legacy lives on in the family she nurtured, the traditions she preserved, and the countless lives she touched with her generosity and love.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 26, at 1:30PM at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Boulevard, Skokie, IL 60077.

May her memory forever be a blessing.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Mrs. Shashoua. Any time Ezra invited me to spend Passover at his home in the 1970s, she welcomed me as if I was family.
From then on, I was always treated me as if I was part of a very warm, generous - and always growing- extended clan.
If we are to be judged by what we leave behind, the Lord will welcome her and thank her for a job well done.
Rest in peace.

Valentine Shashoua was a gift to all fortunate enough to have known her. Always put her children and grandchildren first. Nothing was more important. She glowed when she was with them! She set the examples of what a grandmother should be. Singing, playing, dancing and telling stories to them and always with smiles and laughter. Her children cherished her companionship and loved bringing their friends to share special times together, holidays, mitzvahs and just family meals. She took pride in her beauty, always dressed with style and elegance. I remember seeing her in a lovely dress and high heels at all the family affairs. Valentine, you will be missed and remembered with much love. May your sweet memory be for eternal blessings 🙏

My dear Aunt Valentine was truly one of a kind — warm, elegant, generous, and endlessly loving. She had a beautiful spirit that made everyone around her feel welcomed, cared for, and part of the family. Her laughter, wisdom, strength, and kindness filled every room she entered, and being around her always felt special.

Some of my most cherished memories are around her table — the incredible Iraqi dishes she prepared with so much love, the warmth of her Shabbat lunches, and the way she brought the whole family together. Her legendary t’bit was more than just a meal; it was love, tradition, and family all in one. She had a rare gift of making people feel at home, no matter where they came from.

Aunt Valentine lived an extraordinary life filled with courage and resilience. From Baghdad to Iran, Israel, and then America, she carried her traditions, faith, and devotion to family with grace and pride. She helped so many people, opened her heart and home to others, and created a legacy that will live on through generations.

She was deeply loved and admired by all of us, and her absence leaves an immeasurable void in our hearts. I will forever miss her warmth, her stories, her laughter, and the unconditional love she gave so freely.

Sending all my love and deepest condolences to the entire Shashoua family. May Aunt Valentine’s memory forever be a blessing, and may her beautiful spirit continue to shine through every family gathering, every shared meal, and every tradition she passed on with so much love.🌹
