OBITUARY

David A. Savner, 76

March 15, 1944 - November 22, 2020. David is survived by his wife of nearly 53 years Libby nee Rosenberg. Loving father of Jennifer Savner Levinson and Michael (Jennifer) Savner. Proud grandfather of Molly and Kate Levinson, Abby and Marissa Savner. Dear brother Steve (Cindy Mann) Savner and brother-in-law of Burt (Sheli) Rosenberg. Cherished uncle of many nieces and nephews. David attended Northwestern University ('65) and Northwestern Law School ('68). David was a highly accomplished and widely recognized corporate attorney. He practiced law privately in Chicago before joining Jenner & Block in 1987. In 1998 he became Senior Vice President, General Counsel for defense contractor General Dynamics Corporation. He returned to Jenner & Block in 2010 following his retirement from General Dynamics. While at General Dynamics, David served as a director of Everybody Wins DC!, a Washington-based reading and mentoring program for inner-city children. He was honored by Northwestern with an Alumni Merit Award in 2010. David and Libby were generous philanthropists to Northwestern Law School. Their gift ensures that The David and Libby Savner Scholarship Fund will provide full-tuition scholarships for future generations. The Savners' 2014 gift outfitted Savner Hall, a state-of-the-art classroom dedicated to technology-based teaching solutions. To keep everyone safe and healthy, all services are private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Parkinson’s Center at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab 355 East Erie Street, Chicago, IL, 60611, www.sralab.org. Libby. It was my privilege to work with David at GD
He was not only a great boss and mentor, but also a true and steadfast friend. He was loved and respected by all his lawyers because he was simply a lovely man

David was my cousin and we grew up together with just a three month age difference. We both lived in East Rogers Park just a few blocks apart. We attended the same grammar school and high school and played, swam, and fought together. After high school we grew apart as he went to Northwestern and I to the Boston area. I remember attending his wedding to Libby but after that we did not really communicate until recently and then by email. I had hoped to see him on our next trip to Chicago but first the distance (from The Hague) and then the pandemic conspired against that. I did have several opportunities to hear about his career which illustrated his industriousness, success, and generosity. The contributions of Michael and Molly to the levaya were illuminating and heartfelt. I wish his family and friends strength in the coming period of mourning and may his memory be a blessing.

David was a champion for young children impacting hundreds of thousands of low-income kids around Washington, DC through his major philanthropic support of the literacy mentoring program, Everybody Wins! DC. His reach ran deep into the Washington Metro Area as he literally lifted the organization to become the largest Reading & Mentoring Program in the area. He also directly influenced young lives by mentoring several elementary school age children at Tyler elementary through his loving care for well over a decade while he served on the EW!DC Board of Directors. During David's time on the board, he not only helped support ground-breaking programs but also mentored fellow board members and key staff. His wisdom and leadership have had a lasting influence on the community. He was a kind and generous soul with a positive, joyful passion for life and a great sense of humor. He truly lived a life that mattered.
Both Jim and I were honored to call David our friend. Although our hearts are heavy with loss,.our memories are filled with wonderful stories together. We send our deepest sympathy to Libby and the family. We are standing strong with you and sending our love and prayers as you maneuver through these painful waters.
Love,
Mary & Jim

Libby,
Barb and I were shocked and saddened to learn of David's passing. Despite the sadness, the funeral has prompted fond memories: the many hours David and I spent together at law school; the trip to Springfield to be sworn in as lawyers; your wedding; weekend get togethers; and the time we spent with you and David in recent years.

Please know we are sorry for the loss to you and your family, and accept our regrets and sympathy.
Fondly, Barb and Gary
