OBITUARY

Richard Lewis Wexler

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and community leader passed away on Oct. 19 after a brave battle with cancer. Born and raised in Chicago, he spent his career as a Real Estate attorney but devoted his non-working hours to the betterment of Jewish lives in Chicago, the former Soviet Union and Israel. His commitment to the Jewish people was driven by his belief that the world can be repaired through hard work and force of will. He traveled the world-over for meetings, fundraising and to share his passion for the Jewish world with his family. He will be greatly missed by the love of his life, Roberta (nee Siegel), his children Deborah (Jonathan) Sokobin, Joshua Wexler, Jon (Amie) Wexler, his precious grandchildren Benjy, Ezra and Lily Sokobin; Hanna, Jackson, Tucker, Fern and Talia Wexler. Grandpa/Baba was ALWAYS ready to jump on a plane to New York, DC or Portland, to visit grandkids and also to Napa, CA where he and Bobbi spent many wonderful weeks with family & friends. Those who knew him will miss his sharp wit, incessant writings and zest for life. Graveside Service Friday, 10:00 am at Shalom Memorial Park Cemetery, (Section V Moriah) 1700 W. Rand Road, Arlington Heights. In lieu of flowers memorials to the Jewish United Fund, (JUF) 30 South Wells Street, Room 3134, Chicago, IL 60606 www.juf.org or your charity of choice, would be appreciated. Richard was a great leader in our community, but to me he was a friend a mentor. As a young Jewish communal professional in the 1990's I looked up to Richard for his leadership and in recent years, we became friends. Richard was always there for me with a listening ear and sage advice. I miss our breakfast get togethers at Max's deli. Baruch Dayan HaEmet. Richard's memory will be a blessing for all of us who knew and loved him.

Richard,

You were the light..... The one that brought brightness to the world. Your spirit, your wit, your compassion, energy and depth of attention when in conversation will always be missed. I am proud and honored to have become a true friend over the last 20 years. I will miss you and Bobbi visiting Napa and spending time to talk some more.... till then, your memory will live strong in all who were blessed to know you.

To Bobbi and your and Richard's children and grandchildren. Richard's effect on my life was and remains massive. We last corresponded in late 2020 and I am so full of gladness that we stayed in touch over the years. Serving as UJA's Chief Professional while Rich was National Chairman put us together on a wonderful path. No-one ever stood taller, literally and figuratively for UJA than he did. Two foodies on the road together all over the US and Europe and the Middle East.. No meeting ever happened that didn't have a pre or post dining experience...from the best in NY and Chicago and LA, to the Shwarma stands of East Jerusalem. I will never forget the camaraderie, the hard work, the satisfactions from it and the love. Thank you for the time I was able to share with one of the finest human beings I have ever known.
