OBITUARY

Shana Marley Goldberg Perellis, 37, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away on October 3, 2023. Beloved wife of Jonathan Perellis. Loving mother of Stanley and Dylan Perellis. Cherished daughter of Betti and Neal Goldberg. Dearest sister of Joey (Sara) Goldberg and Liza (Jeffrey) Elsner. Cherished daughter-in-law of Florie and Andy Perellis. Dearest sister-in-law of Cara (Danny) Gaynor. Adored aunt of Poppy Gaynor and Rory Elsner. Devoted granddaughter of Arlene and the late Kalman Goldberg and the late Shirley and George Kline. Special niece, cousin, and friend to many.

Shana brightened every room and had a presence that brought so much love and laughter to everyone who knew her. She was a proud Wisconsin graduate and a Chippewa lifer. The consummate host and de facto leader, Shana gave everything to the people she loved. Her beautiful boys and husband were her world and brought her so much joy.

Shana will be missed by so many, especially her boys, but her light will shine on through all who knew her. We love you Shana.

Learning this news has the entire community shook with grief and is a testament to the impact Shana has had on those who had the opportunity to cross paths with her. I will not be able to attend the funeral in person, but plan to recite the Mourner’s Kaddish in her honor and as a reminder to you all that no mourner is alone in their grief. Sending all of my love to you all as you process and cope with this devastating loss and wishing you moments to celebrate what an incredible woman, daughter, mother, sister, wife and friend Shana will continue to be.

What can I say about the loss of a wonderful kind loving daughter, sister, mother, wife and friend. The Goldberg family was truly one of the most welcoming, warm, and authentic families that I was lucky enough to get to know when I moved to Flossmoor. There are no words. This is such a great loss to so many people. All I can offer is my loving prayers of healing. Words can’t express the sadness in our hearts. We love you guys and I’m so terribly sorry that this could happen to such a beautiful family. I know you will be there for each other and be supported and loved by so many people, and I am one if them. ❤️

Two Mondays ago we spent a lovely evening at the Phil/Robin Goldbergs celebrating Yom Kippur with Shana, Jonathan, Stanley & Dylan surrounded by their loving extended family. Shana exuded her always-on warmth and engagement with the people and world around her. We’re heartbroken over her loss, but are better for having known her. Her legacy lives on through her husband and children and everyone she touched over the course of her too-brief 37 years.

Shana was such an amazing woman and I was so lucky to work with her. We started as coworkers but I absolutely considered her a friend first and foremost. She was such a genuine, caring person and she could always make me laugh. I am so sad to hear about her passing and my heart truly aches for her family, sending love to all and extra strength to Andrew, Stanley, and Dylan as they navigate their daily lives without her. She made such an impression on me, I will never forget her. I am so thankful that I got to know her.

Shana truly DID light up a room. Tom and I send condolences and hugs to the Goldbergs and to Shana’s family (we are sorry we have not had a chance to meet) and friends. Shana was a genuine soul, always! She was always true to herself and a fierce and loving supporter to those she loved and ALL that she loved doing. Shana made such an impact at Chippewa and on Tom and me. We often quote some of the funny things she would say at camp. We are truly saddened and offer our love and support.

I had no idea Shana was in such a struggle. It was a shock to hear of her leaving us. I will always remember her beautiful smile and positive energy. More than anything I loved to pull some Betty and Neal stories out of her and Joey. The funniest always featured dad as the main character. What a wonderful family those, Goldbergs. My heart aches for those little boys, they probably can’t even begin to process losing their devoted mother.
I will keep the Goldbergs and the Perellis’s on my heart and in my prayers.
Betty and Neal, my father always said his children were his heart. Your heart has been broken and I’m so so sorry.

I wish there were words to help comfort you in even a very small way, but they escape me. We all are so saddened by your terrible loss. Shana was always such a sweet and happy child--we all remember her so fondly. Wishing you and your entire family great strength and so much love.

Shana was an absolute joy to be around and I will forever appreciate her friendship, energy, and laughter. Just a couple days ago someone asked me why I studied abroad in Barcelona and I said “My friend Shana Goldberg did and had a blast and told me I should too!”

I’m so deeply saddened to hear of your loss and sending love and prayers to all of the Goldbergs. Shana will be in my heart and I will make a donation in her honor.

Our hearts are breaking for your entire family. Shana was loved by everyone. Shana grew up with our son and her wonderful personality was always visible. We are so sorry for your loss. May Shana rest in peace and May you be comforted among the mourners of Zion. Her memory will always be carried in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved her.

Neal, we have been friends since high school, and I was with you the night you and Betti first met. Together you have accomplished great things, one of them being your beautiful Shana, whose love and selflessness touched everyones lives, and she will always be remembered.

My heart goes out to the Goldberg family, Jonathan and the kids. I was so sad when I heard. Shana and I lost touch in the recent years but had so many fun times in high school and after. Whether we were cruising around listening to Jack Johnson and OAR, cheering on the Chicago Bulls, or having a crazy, but fun, time running around Madison, Shana was always the life of the party. Her smile and laughter were contagious and she was so generous of spirit. Thanks for the good times Shana.
