I am so sorry for your sorrow and loss. I have fond memories of Penny when I was a teenager and joined NSCI youth group. I would drive Les to youth group stuff and she always had a joyful smile to share. Later in life we shared a love of Sisterhood and she attended some of the same Kallah and convention events I did. Again always full of hospitality and smiles. I have continued to embrace her spirit with own love of Sisterhood and will carry her memory forward with me. Warm hugs and may her memory always be a source of strength, comfort and love to all of you.

Penny Schwartz Levy was my mom's favorite niece, and together they would spend what to me seemed like hours in animated conversation. As the daughter of my mom Florie Dorfman's older sister and eldest sibling Ida Dorfman Schwartz, Penny always felt a special bond with my mom, especially as her own mother had passed away too young. I believe that after Ida's death, they sort of adopted each other.

The subject of Penny and Florie's conversation was often that of cooking. The art of and love of cooking was of tremendous importance among the women in the Dorfman clan. Penny and Florie were passionate about it, and they treasured each other for this mutual passion. So permit me to imagine for just a second that now, after so many years of being separated, they are once again able to share their thoughts, and even their recipes, with each other, where they now reside.

Once not very long ago I was speaking to Penny about my granddaughter Hannah, Hannah Florence, and Penny asked me if she loved to cook! Yes, I said, and of course Penny was not surprised, given her knowledge of whom Hannah was named for!

But obviously this little memory is but a miniscule fragment of the vast store of beautiful memories we all have of Penny, of her tremendous enthusiasm for so many aspects of life, and especially for her profound involvement in each and everything that had to do with the goings on in our emotionally close but geographically farflung family.

Last year when I organized the Dorfman reunion in California, I strongly urged Penny to attend, in fact I more than urged, I nudged, in fact I badgered her to attend, feeling that a Dorfman reunion without Penny would be like a cake without the icing, We had to settle for a phone conversation shared among many of us with her on the Sunday morning of the event. I am now glad I was able to make a trip to Chicago six months ago to visit with Penny one last time, in June of 2025.

Seeing her then I did of course realize that she was in pain, physically, from her orthopedic issues, yet at the same time she seemed to be 100% herself, with every bit the same sparkle as always, the same warmth as always, and I had zero idea that she would not make it much past her next, most recent birthday. I am very grateful that I was able once more to enjoy the company of such a dazzling and caring cousin. I shall always treasure the memory of that visit, and, as well, of the many previous times in my life when Penny graced my life.

For me, the phrase, "may her memory be for a blessing," is especially meaningful when it comes to Penny. I believe I now have a deeper understanding of that phrase, as I suppose we all do, thanks to my cousin Penny.
