Mrs. Berns (she will always be Mrs. Berns to me), welcomed me into her home and treated me like her own son. My friendship with her son, Rick, and the whole Berns family has had a positive and everlasting effect on me.
One fond memory of her was when Rick and I were yong we sort of misbehaved and she found out about it and confronted us. I tried to “sweet talk” our way out of it and she said, “Don’t try that Eddie Haskel nonsense on me!” , with a grin on her face.
I loved her dearly.
May she rest in peace.

I first met Muriel when Ilene and I became close friends….the summer before my senior year in high school. I spent a lot of time in the Berns home for the few years I still lived in Chicago. I came to know Frank, but mostly Muriel well. I have vivid memories of sitting at their kitchen table talking with Muriel when I arrived early and Ilene wasn’t home yet. She always asked me in to wait, would offer me something to eat, and talk. My own mother died early in my senior year so I’m sure Muriel’s presence and time was a comfort to me. Over the years, after my move to Los Angeles in 1973, I’d periodically call Muriel and we’d catch each other up on our lives and talk about TV shows we watched and music we enjoyed (like Frank Sinatra and other singers of that era). Whenever I visited Ilene over these past 50 years, we’d always visit Muriel (and Frank when he was alive) no matter where they/she lived. She was always delighted to see me and greeted me with a jubilant “Gail !!” and a hug when I arrived. As recently as last year, when her memory was truly failing, it touched my heart and made me smile (AND surprised me) when she still remembered me and we were able to reminisce. She will be missed.
