OBITUARY

Irma Levy, 88, was born January 18, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York, Irma came to Chicago as a 1 year old with her parents, Morris and Sarah Putterman, and her 3 older brothers, Eli, Harry and Joseph.

Irma lived at home and graduated from Marshall High School and then went to the University of Illinois at Navy Pier. After 1 year of college, Irma decided to take a job as a Secretary at Sears Roebuck. She worked there until after she married Leroy and until she was 6 months pregnant with her first son, Steven. Irma and Leroy married on October 6, 1956. They lived in an apartment until they bought their first and only home in West Rogers Park in 1964.

They joined Congregation Ezras Israel and Irma joined the Sisterhood and was active until she became ill. Irma was a Cub Scout Den Mother at her home for all 3 of her sons and many of her sons’ friends and neighborhood boys. In the Summer, Irma loved to go to South Haven, Michigan, rent a cottage and stay at the lake and watch her boys play on the beach. After her boys grew up, Irma went back to work as a secretary for a packaging company for 25 years, until the company moved to the far suburbs. Everyone loved Irma. Words cannot express how much she will be missed. Irma was a wonderful, devoted and caring wife, mother, Nana, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to so many. She was the most selfless person anyone ever met. She was a true matriarch and the glue that held her family together. She devoted her life to her husband and boys.

Irma is survived by her loving husband of almost 68 years, Leroy, and her 3 devoted sons, Steven (Lisa) Levy, Daniel (Lisa) Levy, and Robert (Patricia, deceased) Levy. Irma “Nana” is survived by her 3 precious grandchildren, Adam (Leah) Levy, Alyssa (Ashley) Levy Estoque and Jared (Nina) Levy, and by her 3 great grandchildren, Ashton, Adina, and Teddi Levy. Irma is predeceased by her great grandson, Trey Levy, by her parents Morris and Sarah Putterman, and by her 3 protective brothers, Eli (Estelle) Putterman, Harry (Grace) Putterman and Joseph (Naomi) Putterman, and by many of her loving cousins. Irma has had many great and loyal friends and neighbors throughout the years, including Pepi Paradise and Don and Linda Zaloudek. Special thanks to Irma’s many loving nieces, nephews and cousins, with much appreciation to her very close cousin, Nettie Matthew.

Service Wednesday 12 noon at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd (at Niles Center Road), Skokie. Interment Memorial Park. My heart breaks for your tremendous loss. I remember when Irma & Leroy moved into my block. At the time there were just Steven and Danny. When Robert was born walking with your grandfather when you were in the stroller. I loved your mother who was simply the kindest woman.

Several years ago when I was driving down Fairfield with Joe we stopped by to say hello and she lit up with her amazing smile. I’m so glad we talked with her for quite a while. Even though she isn’t here anymore, she will always be with you in your hearts.

Irma was like a second mother to me growing up we used to go to their house, lay on the floor and their living room and listen to stories from both her and Leroy. I’m glad Irma is finally at peace. I loved her.

Dear Aunty Irma,
My fondest memories were when you lived on Cicero Avenue, and I would come over with a friend or two on Friday and Saturday nights we would laugh and dance to the music you played. You always had a way of making me feel special. I don't know if I told you often enough that I loved you and what a wonderful person you were. I love you and I'll miss you always.
