GUEST BOOK

We encourage you to share your personal condolences and stories of Harriet L. Susman below and we will share them with the family.

Harriet was a dear friend and my volunteer partner at Silver Cross Hospital where we volunteered in pet therapy with my dog Comet for ten years. She had a gift of putting people at ease. Even when they were not in the mood for a visit with a dog she usually managed to change their minds. By the time we left the patients’s room they were smiling, laughing and looking at Harriet like she was a lifelong friend. Watching her work her magic and telling her stories (she had a story for every occasion) was often the highlight of the week for me. She was a very, very special lady and I’m honored to have felt her love.

Our deepest sympathy to Sherman and his family. It has been
A joy and an honor to know Harriet. She loved her friends and especially her family. She spoke with love and pride for her daughters, their husbands and her Grandchildren. She was gracious, compassionate, kind and welcoming. We have many memories of fun times and interesting discussions. I’m proud to say she was our friend. May God bless her and bring comfort to her loved ones.

Our sincerest condolences to Sherman, Marla, Galyn, their husbands & children from nephew Jeffrey Toback and wife Naoko. Aunt Harriet is a big loss for us, too, and, fortunately, Naoko got to know her the two times we were together with her and Sherman. Jeffrey also fondly remembers Aunt Mary and Uncle Frank, Harriet's parents, who were also in his life for a long time during his childhood.

The Susman Family (Harriett, Sherman, Marla, and Galyn) are part of Jeffrey's fondest childhood memories, especially visiting the family in Park Forest. Jeffrey always had a great time with them, their dog Byron, and his sister and parents. Harriet and Sherman were always great hosts and were always his loving and caring aunt and uncle.. The first argument Jeffrey can remember with his own family was when he was 4 years old and became very upset that his parents thought he was too young to go to Harriet & Sherman's wedding! Had Jeffrey known that Harriet and Sherman were embarking upon a 68 year marriage, he might have been even more upset that he didn't get to go! Jeffrey also remember Aunt Harriet showing him Galyn as a newborn in her crib--an amazing site for a 10ish year old kid. Jeffrey loved the Park Forest house because you could go around the interior of the house in a circle--super cool to a kid. And when they got an organ and Jeffrey was learning piano, he couldn't wait to play it when he got to Park Forest.

Fast forward many years and Jeffrey moved to Los Angeles and Harriet and Sherman moved to Frankfort. The first time Jeffrey went to their home Marla and Bob were also there and, once again, another super-cool house! As always Harriet & Sherman were welcoming, kind, and glad to see him. Jeffrey was at their home 2 more times, most recently in 2022 with Naoko when, again, Harriet and Sherman welcomed us and graciously took us to their nearby club for dinner. We are very glad that we got to see them both at that time as there was no indication of Harriet's impending illness. We will treasure the memory of that last visit.

The section of Waldheim Cemetery where the Susmans and Tobacks rest really shows the circular meshing to the 2 families. Harriett's grandparents, Betty and Morris Rosen, were Jeffrey's great grandparents on his father's side. But Harriet was Jeffrey's aunt because she married Jeffrey's mother's brother Sherman. It's always amazing to go to Waldheim and see the two families lying so close together. While we're very sad that we will be visiting Harriet at Waldheim on our next visit, we know she is resting in peace with all of her most cherished family members from both families nearby. And we know that her vivacious spirit, gentle kindness, and pretty smile will live on with Sherman, her children, and her grandchildren.
