OBITUARY

Pam Cockrell, December 28, 1951 - August 17, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we share our dear, beloved, matriarch, Pam Cockrell, passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2024. After putting up an incredible battle against B-Cell Lymphoma, she chose everlasting peace, surrounded by her cherished family.

On December 28th, 1951, Leo and Betty London welcomed Pam into the world in Chicago, at Weiss Memorial Hospital. Little did they know what was in store. As a young child, Pam was a relationship builder. She loved making friends with kids from all backgrounds and found great joy in shopping for everyone around her. Whether Brut cologne or Cabbage Patch Kids, Pam could be found in line for the best deal, coupons in hand. Weekend trips to Randhurst, Golf Mill, and art fairs were part of her routine. And yes, this Jewish woman adored all things Christmas. From Jewish star toppers to Black angel ornaments on her multiple Christmas trees. Her Easter baskets were epic as her children and grandchildren will attest. Being festive and giving gifts was Pam’s love language.

Pam went on to attend Evanston Township High School where she met some of her best friends - Mopsy, Ollie, Jap, Flash, Birdie and Denise just to name a few. She then met the love of her life, Sonny, at Southern Illinois University. From a trailer in Carbondale, to a two-flat with her parents and teenage twin sisters (Penny and Paula), Pam moved in to raise her first baby girl, Corrie, alongside her beloved Sonny. Shortly thereafter, Josh and Kourtney arrived.

Pam wanted nothing more than to raise a family and be a mom. The moment she got pregnant with Corrie, her life changed forever. She committed to ensuring her children had access to education and became a figure to look out for at school board meetings. Pam and Sonny were known for advocating for racial equity and social justice, and this was long before “woke” - Pam and Sonny are the OGs of DEI. Whether challenging the tracking system that reinforced institutional racism in the classroom or petitioning for more cultural diversity in the fine arts department (ahem…thank you Pam for getting The Wiz into production circa 1989), Pam and Sonny became a fixture in the Evanston community and a model for organizing and education reform.

Pam sacrificed her college completion to be an amazing mother and provider for her family. She inspired all of her children to pursue higher education, and interestingly, all of Pam’s children and her grandson, Jordan, went on to graduate from the University of Michigan. Ann Arbor was a second home to Pam and her family, and watching her only son Josh play football in the Big House was a dream come true.

Pam’s professional career began with volunteering at Headstart as a teenager. This fulfilled her passion for children, and eventually she joined McDougal Littel, a textbook publishing company, for about a decade. Pam also spent time in medical billing, which helped her navigate our cryptic and bureaucratic healthcare system that would serve as a resource to everyone in Pam’s community. If you had an ailment or a question about a deductible, Pam was your first call. She was connected to doctors (of any specialization you could imagine) and knew how to negotiate when insurance companies would inevitably send you a bill that was riddled with misinformation.

On any given Sunday, you could find Pam cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers and arguing with Josh about their fantasy football picks from her bed. And during the week, if you called Pam, you’d almost certainly be met with “Let me call you back - I’m on hold with Walgreens.” Pam was the queen bee of wrangling in customer service calls and getting points, credits, errors, you name it - resolved by the end of day.

Pam’s heart and spirit was filled with love, generosity, empathy, and a very clear and direct moral compass. If you were in need, were feeling down, wanted to vent, or just could benefit from a pick-me-up, Pam was there. She showed her love in so many ways - from Christmas cookies, to holiday cards (that consistently arrived at some point by February or March), to daily obscure “good morning” memes. You felt seen, supported and safe in Pam’s presence.

Pam was clear, consistent and always spoke her mind. She did this until the very end after fighting non-stop and suffering excruciating back pain for months. On August 17th at 12:44 a.m., Pam took her final breath with her baby girl Kourtney by her side. She is survived by her husband (Sonny), children (Corrie, Josh (Lisa) and Kourtney), siblings (Bruce, Penny, and Paula), and her only precious grandchildren (André, Jordan, and Liana) and all of her beloved nieces and nephews. We invite all the people who love Pam to join us in holding close to your heart the abundant memories and ways Mama Jack made you feel.

Service Friday 9AM Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd., (at Niles Center Road) Skokie. Interment Private. Sending my condolences to Mr. Cockrell, Josh, Lisa and entire Cockrell family. I met Mrs. Cockrell when Josh coached my daughter, Courtney, in FAAM. She was the Rockets most faithful fan and the loudest cheerleader. Mrs. Cockrell cared for every girl on the team as if they were her own daughters. We all became family. I will cherish those memories forever.
Thank you Josh and family for sharing your mom with us. Much love always.

Dearest Pam. You were truly a light in our lives. Mariah truly enjoyed playing with Big Shots and you were so pivotal in my daughter’s decision to continue playing basketball. It even got her to the collegiate level. Big shots made the game of basketball enjoyable and Mariah’s love for the game continued to grow. Thank you for ALWAYS being so kind, loving, and nurturing. We are deeply saddened and you will truly be missed. Sending love and condolences to the entire Cockrell family.

My sweet Pam. I met Pam in 6th grade during Big Shots and she was the best blessing in my life. I would’ve never found my passion for basketball if she never came up after the Loyola championship game asking me to play for Big Shots. It was the best day of my little life. I never expected to find a family within basketball but Pam ensured I did. The car rides. The gifts. The cookies. The smiles. The Laughter. Just simply a beautiful soul. I’ll always be blessed to have known Pam.

Every year, Pam would mail me one of her over decorated Christmas cards each March. It would include details of what the family had done the past year and her joy in wanting to maintain the holiday season with us. Pam's heart was filled with love as demonstrated through this and her wonderful family. I will miss her.

It’s so much I can say about this beautiful soap but I’ll just say this. When I first met both Pam and Sonny at a fish football game when my son was around 6/7 years old they both approached me about my son to play for their flag football team I believe Sonny was coaching for his grandson. From the day we met they took me and my son into their lives and treated us as family. Every Christmas Pam always had a gift to give me and my son for Christmas which was so kind of her to do. Always enjoyed our conversations. Very wise woman she was but just our conversation about life friendship and academic that she talked all the time to my son and it paid off that my son did very well bcuz of her encouraging my son to do well in school. She treated my son like she did all her grandchildren and that to me was such a beautiful thing to see since my son grandparents were all deceased so she took it upon herself to include my son in thanksgiving dinners Christmas dinners etc just treated us as family and I’ll cherish my friendship forever. I’ll miss Mrs Queen Pam may she rest in heaven. Love you Pam.

We met Pamela only for a few hours in the emergency waiting room at Highland Park Hospital . In those few hours we realized that we were with a very strong , loving and giving woman . She allowed other patients who needed immediate care to go before her and sat and waited for hours until they finally called her into the ER at close to midnight .
We are so sorry for your family’s loss and I am sure a loss for the whole community that she was part off. Shalom to Pamela .

Pam is an absolutely amazing generous And loving woman. My daughter Carly was lucky enough to be on Joshes rockets basketball team within FAAM. Not only did my daughter get a wonderful coach our family got a supportive entire family. Josh, Sunny and Pam have been unbelievably wonderful to my family.. Many times she would drive girls that didn’t have transportation to a basketball game, pay for their uniforms and supply meals. She is a selfless, wonderful human being. I feel lucky to have known her.

My thoughts and prayers to the family.
Pam was a gift to us all. Kenny, Aaleyiah, and I loved every moment spent with Pam. Big shots was an amazing chapter not only in the kids lives, but the parents too. I gained a friendship with Pam I was blessed to have. She was there for my kids and I on so many levels. Pam gave me the courage and guidance to demand meetings with “everyone” when my kid was facing horrible treatment for the color of his skin. Sonny and Pam offered to be right by my side as a parent when I faced so many barriers for my kids. Pam’s advice, support, and love can never be matched by anyone. She has always been an angel to my family who now is I’m SURE the highest angel of them all. We love you so much Pam.

Pam’s obituary is the perfect tribute to an incredible woman who welcomed everyone into her house and her heart. She had an open door policy and treated all friends like family. Her house was always aflutter with activity with all members engaged in tons of activities, but they always welcomed you in and brought you along for the ride in the back of the station wagon. She made sure her house was full of debate, discussion, education, and connection. I still have and wear a sweater that was handed down to me from Courtney and Corrie that I received in elementary school which she bought thirty years ago at Randhurst. She weaved people together into a close knit community and always welcomed more people in, but you better be ready to express opinions, support your arguments, and debate the finer points.

She had a way of building on strengths and encouraging excellence in all who were lucky enough to grace her presence. She understood systems advocacy and how to cut through it. She shared her skill with grace and love. Despite the fact that she was working from her suburban house, her values of community, service, debate, diversity, equity, equality, inclusion, and advocacy have impacted not only Chicago, Michigan, and New York, but the world as those who love her travel, work and share the passion she cultivated. May Pam’s memories be a blessing and her spirit live on in the words and deeds of all those she touched for countless generations to come!

Dear Sonny, Corrie, and your family, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. It was a privilege getting to know Pam over the years and seeing firsthand what a wonderful wife and mother and proud grandma she was. Her warmth and thoughtfulness and sense of humor were evident from the moment I met her. May her legacy and memory live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Aunt Pam was a dynamic, passionate, and strong advocate for the disenchanted. She advocated for those who lacked a voice. I was inspired by her drive to not accept a path but determine your own route in this world. Pam loved her family and friends. In fact, love defined her as a person. I will miss my Aunt and her wonderful smile. Years ago I bought her an ornament for her Christmas tree. I forgot about it when I last visited, but not Pam. She had an incredible gift to retain meaningful information about each person she met. Love you Pam.

My condolences to the family. Pam was a wonderful person.
I always looked forward to my annual Christmas card from her. She kept me up to date on everything the kids were doing. Even though I haven’t seen them in some time I knew exactly how they were doing. I’m definitely going to miss her.

Dear Sonny and family,
I met Pam at McDougal Littell over 35 years ago, back when Betty was a receptionist there. Pam was the absolute sweetest person you could ever meet! When I left the company, we stayed in touch through her (and my) famous yearly holiday cards. I still have hers from this year and will cherish it. We were delighted to realize a number of years ago that her André and my son, Eli, went to junior high together in Highland Park! My thoughts and love go out to her beloved Sonny, Corrie and Andre, and the entire rest of the family. I streamed the service and learned even more about her. She was quite a woman and will be missed! XO

I first met Pam and Sonny at a Basket Ball game at MLK elementary school. My daughter Karel was in 4th or 5th grade at the time and was playing with her school that night. Pam approached me and handed me a brochure, inviting Karel to try out for Big Shots, where their son Josh was a Coach . From that day on, we became family. Outside of tournaments, she would invite my family to Hanukkah, Thanksgiving, her grand children graduation parties… She has always included us in her Christmas list, offering gifts to my girls and I every single year and sending my family a Christmas card with lots of stickers on it. Those cards will always give brief updates on her family members and I could tell how proud she was of every one of them. When her daughter Corry and grand daughter Liana when to my home country in Cameroon, she was so very exited to tell me all about it, sharing pictures of them and videos of Liana dancing to Cameroonian songs. Pam was such a kind hearted, selfless, giving person, always willing to help others. We’ll miss her and we pray that her family find the strength to move forward and carry on her legacy. Our condolences to the Cockrell family and especially to Sonny who will miss her the most, I am sure!!! We love you all!!!
