OBITUARY

Kenneth Alan Freedman, DDS. age 95.
Beloved husband of Arlene nee Levinthal. Loving father of Michael (Kathy Leonard) Freedman, Lauren Freedman and Ruth (Daniel Wander) Freedman. Proud grandfather of Dr. Ryan (Jessica Warchall) Freedman, Jordan Freedman, Connor (Dr. Hannah Silverman) Freedman, Rachel Wander, Hannah Wander and Ren Habiby. Dear brother of Pauline (the late Al) Lifton and brother-in-law of Carole (the late Carl) Mishel. Devoted son of the late Dorothy and Julius Freedman and son-in-law of the late Shirley and Joseph Levinthal. Cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews and adored cousin to many.

Ken was a true patriarch of his family, always the go-to guy for information, love and genuine company. He understood and appreciated the unique qualities of those he loved, and acceptance was one of his most important gifts, no matter the circumstances. He practiced dentistry for 60 years in Beverly, the old-fashioned way where patients and his team were like family. His contributions to gerontology were pioneering, particularly his dental van, which has been a model for care. Arlene was the love of his life and they were blessed with friends from both the north and south sides who were an integral part of their circle. Travel was always on his mind as he introduced his family to the national parks and invested in a Vail condo despite the advice of his accountant. Trips to Mexico were routine and so many good times were had with friends and family around the globe. Sports captured his attention as he followed Chicago teams and passed that love onto his kids and grandkids. His volunteer efforts spanned his entire life from President of Rodfei Sholom to running services at the Carrington, always stepping up to serve.

Service Sunday 11 AM at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd (at Niles Center Road), Skokie. Interment Jewish Oakridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hadassah Chicago-North Shore 900 Skokie Blvd., Suite 295, Northbrook, Illinois 60062 www.hadassah.org. To all who loved Ken :

I’ll always remember how happy Ken was to see you and the warmth you felt from him when you were together.

An elegant man who lit up the room with his smile and grace.

Curious and generous, he will be missed. I’m grateful to have known him and to know that my friend, Lauren was comforted and supported by this one of a kind dad!

With love ,

Kym

I was fortunate enough to meet Dr. Freedman as a new hire in his dental practice at 118th and Western in November 1975. When I was ready to retire forty years later at age sixty two as a thrilled new grandmother, Doc understood and decided to let his dental license expire in September 2015. He was an encouraging and supportive mentor who made me feel like a partner, not employee, in his practice. Doc proudly showed off the picture of his six grandchildren on his phone screen to most patients, with whom he could schmooze about most any topic of discussion. I will definitely miss you, Doc! But I will remember “There has to be a pony in there somewhere!”

To Kenneth’s Family,
I know Kenneth was a devoted father, father-in-law and grand parent, having met him after becoming friends with Kathy and Mike thirty years ago. May his memory be a blessing and may the beautiful family he created take comfort in this time of loss - knowing he will always watch over them.
Much love, Jill

Art ( of blessed memory) & I shared so many cherished memories with your parents beginning with our Israel Bond trip in July, 1976.
Commitment to Israel, Synagogue & Hadassah kept us connected.
We broke bread together just a few times during Their last season in Florida. (It was at our last dinner together that Arlene talked about the onset of Dementia.) Ken was supportive, kind, caring and helpful.
Ken loved his friends!
Above all he loved bragging about his kids and amazing grandchildren!

To all the Freedman's, my second family,
The world won't be the same without Doc in it. All my life I've been blessed to have Kenny and Arlene right next door as my second mom and dad.
I'll forever remember Doc sitting on the front porch in his jumpsuit, smoking a cigar and watching the world go by.

His memory will always be a blessing

What a wonderful man. I think back to when Ruth brought her Mom and Dad to our Christmas Eve Party . I’m sure Ken didn’t know what to think, wild kids lots of people , lots of food. Well that party started in the early 80,’ and continued until Covid. Ken and Arlene along with Ruth and just about every family continued to come. Over the years we became wonderful friends who always enjoyed lots of laughs. Will I mourn his loss , of course , but I am forever grateful to have know him and the family. Without Ruth this would never have happened. Family: You were so fortunate to have him. Trust the memories. because they will always make you smile.
