OBITUARY

Samuel Tepper, 91 years, 11 Months and 3 days.

Beloved husband of the late Grace nee Goldstein. Loving father of Marc (Carrie) Tepper and David (Lori) Tepper and the late Robin McCoskey. Proud grandfather of Samantha (Sean Anderson) Tepper, Daniel Tepper, Isaac Tepper, Sarah McCoskey, and Joshua (Samantha) McCoskey. Cherished great grandfather of Aurora and Grace. Adored son of the late Morris and the late Bella Tepper. Dear brother of the late Rose (the late Leonard) Fishman, the late Frances (the late Sam) Cohen and the late Marian (the late Marvin) Hoffman. Brother-in- law of Kandi-linn (Fred) Homer, the late Donna (Louis) Crow and the late Joel Goldstein. He was a proud veteran of the Korean war serving in the 1st Loudspeaker & Leaflet Company due to the family printing company which he would later go on to own and operate in Chicago and Barrington. After returning home, he met Grace while she was finishing Nursing School at Cook County Hospital. They married in 1954 and lived on the North side, then settling in Highland Park to raise their family. Early members of Congregation B’nai Torah being involved in all aspects of its growth. Semi-retiring with Grace to Lincolnshire. They welcomed each grandchild with love and affection, attending all of their special events including Bar/Bat mitzvah’s, graduations and weddings. They worked together as Real Estate Brokers with Coldwell Banker before retiring to Florida. While Grace beaded, painted and explored her artistic side, Pop as he was affectionately referred to, took a job at ABC Liquors where he would meet their closest friends George and Lucille. Moving to Florida gave them a new lease on life. In retirement they often hosted family, played cards, dominos, and mahjong. A visit to Grace & Sam’s was always filled with love, laughter and new adventures. He had an infectious laugh and never a harsh word for anyone. He was completely devoted to his wife Grace and after he could no longer care for her at home, he found Morse Life Alzheimer's facility. They provided her with amazing care along with providing Sam with tremendous support. He sold their home so he could move closer to her and visit daily. Only COVID separated them when the facility closed to all visitors. He spent the next 4 months back in his hometown, Chicago, rushing back to say goodbye before she passed away in May 2020. His final year was spent with family including his two great grand-daughters Aurora and Grace. Memorial service Friday 3:30PM at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 195 N. Buffalo Grove Road (One block north of Lake Cook Road) Buffalo Grove. A private interment will be held at the South Florida National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Riverside Foundation, 935 Lakeview Parkway, Suite 198, Vernon Hills, IL 60061 www.riversidefoundation.net or the Morse Life Foundation, 4920 Loring Drive, West Palm Beach, FL 33417, www.morselifefoundation.org. I have known my dad for my whole life, and over that time, he has taught me a lot. Here are a few of the highlights.
He taught me to have a great work ethic. From as early as I can remember, he would allow us kids to go to Tepper Press and WORK for him. At the end of the day, he would punch out a payroll check and hand it over. We had real job duties collating with carbon paper or NCR forms. In later years, but before I had a license, I would walk packages to deliver to customers. I was proud to make a delivery from Tepper Press. He taught me how to set type. I set up and printed my own business cards on the hand feed press in the Barrington shop, the last of which I still have in my wallet. The only time I ever remember leaving work early (and I was pretty young) was to sneak out to see Hang 'Em High at the movies. I am still a Clint Eastwood fan. When he shifted careers to real estate, he did it with passion and excellence. And when he sold liquor, well, lets just say he focused on the highest commission products.
He taught me fun things like how to bowl. He used to take me to Strike and Spare bowling lanes during the B'nai Torah bowling leagues. He didn't really teach me as much as just allow me to use a lane. Today, I am still a lousy bowler, but so was he.
I am not a proud of this, but he taught me to drive. He was an aggressive driver, probably one of his worst traits. He referred to other drivers as "Jamopes" whenever they did something he didn't like. He was a firm believer that the first one to an intersection had the right of way, and no one should be walking where he was driving, even if it was a crosswalk.
Most importantly, he taught me to care about people, and to love. Grace was his only true love, from the time they met until the moment he died. I remember that every single day he would kiss my mom when he got home from work. Every night, he would put his watch on the kitchen table, place his ring inside it, and his money clip next to that. It was his routine so he would know where they were, but also to be quiet in the morning when he left for work early the next day, not to disturb mom or us kids. Later, he found ways to express his love even when she barely knew him. He would bring BLT sandwiches, or pizza to her at Morse Life, and a real treat was a handful of chocolate covered almonds that he kept hidden in her dresser drawer. He would bring her hot coffee and snacks daily, and would kiss her like he just got home from work. True love and devotion is doing those things when someone may not even know who you are, but can still feel your presence.
These are just some of the things that my dad taught me, and have helped make me a better person. I only hope I can be a reflection of him.
I will miss him dearly.

Sam was the greatest "father" a daughter-in-law could ever wish for! He always treated me like a daughter.
Wonderful memories of times we spent together will always live on in my heart.

My condolences go out to the entire Tepper. I give my deepest sympathy, because I know what is like to lose a loved one. Even though we lived miles apart, we will always be family. I have one story to tell about Sam. I came to visit Chicago in 1974 (my memory might be a little spotty) and I arranged to visit with Sam and family. I took the el to downtown Chicago and met up Sam and I got the tour of the print shop. I believe we had lunch and this is what I remember the most. Sam says to what would you like to do take in an adult movie, go for a massage. etc. Being an 18 year old I didn't know how to respond to that. I do not for life of me remember what we did that afternoon. When Sam was finished with work, he took me home by train to his house. I believe Grace made a wonderful meal and we talked for hours. Then Sam drove me to my cousin's house in Forest Park. I have fond memories of what I do remember and seeing Sam at family events. This being my fondest memory of Sam. My heart goes out to you all !!

I am so sorry for your loss. Sam was such a warm and giving man. He opened his home to me twice and from the moment I entered his home until my departure he was the most gracious host. Generous, entertaining, eager to make sure I felt welcome and at home. He was genuinely kind. I hope you find comfort in knowing Sam left a loving, lasting impression on me and I know so many others. You are all in my heart and in my prayers.

What a life and what a love. I do have a lot of respect for Sam, the way he was supporting Grace but also the way he was welcoming me at his home when I was visiting from Germany. Those are the first things that come to my mind when thinking about Sam. I am very happy for you all that you did have the chance for staying with him and enjoying life together with him. Please accept my full sympathy. All the best to you and your family. It is always very sad losing a memorable person, but is much better to have known and appreciated this memorable person. My thoughts are with you. A truly great guy your dad, after watching the service, now I do know the stories of the big bank notes (dollars) which he gave me as a present. Celebrate his life, he deserves it.
