OBITUARY

Fern Bomchill Davis, age 74

Beloved wife of the late Samuel B. Davis. Loving mother of the late Bradley Benton Davis. Dear sister of Albert Bomchill and the late William Bomchill. Cherished aunt of Eugene Bomchill, Elline (Daniel) Eliasoff, Jeff (Jackie) Bomchill, Mark (Judie) Bomchill and Renee Bomchill. Great aunt of nine nieces and nephews. Graveside service Tuesday 1:30PM at Westlawn Cemetery (Memorial Section), 7801 W. Montrose Ave., Norridge. There will be a memorial service following the interment at 3PM at Temple Sholom, 3480 N. Lake Shore Dr., Chicago, IL 60657. For almost 50 years, Fern practiced law in the litigation group of Mayer Brown LLP, joining the firm in 1972 as an associate following her graduation from the University of Chicago Law School. She was promoted to partner in 1979 and formally retired from the partnership in 2018. Fern stayed on with the firm as Senior Counsel until her passing. Fern Bomchill was a mensch in every sense of the word. She was selfless, even when faced with the greatest adversity. She lived a life of purpose, honor, and integrity — traits that are increasingly rare. Many of us at Mayer Brown owe the development of our professional judgment and our commitment to each other to the example Fern set for us as a lawyer, partner, and good friend. My cousin Fern and I were close as we were growing up, but then over the years we had drifted apart, and saw each other on occasion. But I thought of her often. Highly intelligent, thoughtful and caring. I admired her greatly and will miss her.

Several years ago, I had the honor of attending Thanksgiving hosted by Fern. A gathering of her beloved family filled with laughter and warmth. During the visit, Fern and I strolled the cold frigid beach of Lake Michigan. True to her profession, she had lots of questions. I answered and asked a few of my own.

I have often thought of this initial meeting with Fern. She was truly, the family Matriarch. A strong woman that defined integrity.

In the midst, of her greatest battle, she remained strong and determined to win with dignity. And she did! She called the shots, set the pace, and enjoyed family and friends to the end.

Fern and I planned to stroll the beaches of Lake Michigan this summer. I will take that stroll in loving memory.

When Bonnie and I think of Fern, we think of a very special person. A person who always greets you with a smile and a warm embrace. She is genuine, kind and considerate. So many people love Fern. Popularity is not easy to attain-not only in relation to your peers but also in relation to so-so many. One must be honest, sincere, fair minded, engaging, hospitable, able to sense when people are hurting, show genuine respect for those deserving, be real and straight forward, and let’s not forget knowing when to have fun and kid. In other words, BE LIKE FERN BOMCHILL DAVIS. Of course, cousin Fern is brilliant and her professional acumen was always there when needed. It is the case, that she endured much sadness in her life. No doubt, her strength of character helped her through those very hard times.

Bonnie and Larry Powitz LOVE this fine Lady. The world was a much better place with her in it.

I met Fern though our bridge group and we played frequently for many years. She was a real inspiration to me in how to live a life that is full of loss but yet retains so much joy. One of the things she had hoped to be able to do in retirement is to learn to play golf and join me and our friend Ellen on the links. I will miss our annual Bears games and will always add “doodly doo” at the end of the song when they score. RIP, Fern, I love you.

I have known Fern since she was in high school. I have watched her as she completed college and went on to law school. Daniel was very proud to have another attorney in the family. She had a very long and productive law career. She got married and had a child. Tragically both her husband and child left this earth way to early. Fern exhibited great strength dealing with these hardships. She loved to travel and play tennis. One thing I could never do in the times we played was to even win a set. Rest in peace Fern, you will be greatly missed. Alice Bomchill
