OBITUARY

Harold A. “Hal” Bergen, 97,

Beloved husband of Sharon Peters Bergen, passed away March 10, just a few months ahead of their 50th wedding anniversary. Prior to his marriage to Sharon in 1975, Hal had been married for 24 years to the late Molly Paskind Bergen. Born on March 24, 1927, Hal grew up in North Lawndale and later, Albany Park. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1945, he entered the Army, ultimately serving as a Signal Corps sound technician at the Nuremberg Trials of Nazi war criminals. The experience left him with a somber view of humanity’s capacity to justify slaughter. “Anything goes as long as you’re winning,” he said in a Chicago Tribune interview in 2019. “External forces . . . force people to live with horrendous deeds.” After military service, Hal attended the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Later in life, he was a devoted alumnus, serving as an officer of the alumni organization, and later on the university’s board of trustees. Hal also served as a Director of the Public Relations Society of America, a member of the Board of Directors at North Shore Congregation Israel and as the Board President of School District 108 in Highland Park, Illinois. Hal was passionate about his work as a public relations executive, ultimately heading the Chicago office of Ruder Finn. He was a tireless advocate for his clients, among them Universal Oil Products, Madison Gas & Electric, S&C Electric Co., and many associations, including the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors, or as he fondly referred to them, “the boiler boys.” He was especially proud of assisting Universal Oil Products in its efforts to get Congress to ban the use of lead in gasoline and help reduce air pollution. Hal and Sharon began their married life in Highland Park, later moving to Chicago’s Gold Coast. Together, they enjoyed Chicago’s theater and restaurant scene, hosting parties for friends and family, and taking lazy vacations. Colleagues in the public relations world, Hal and Sharon took great joy in relaxing at home with their kitties, Boris and Tuni, and later, Max and Cece. A devoted and loving family man, Hal had two children, Kathy (Bergen Raffetto) and Chuck, with his beloved first wife, Molly Paskind Bergen. Among their many happy times were sledding and ice skating in St. Joseph, Mich.; hosting family holiday parties; and taking family vacations to the Colorado Rockies and Expo ’67 in Montreal. In addition to Sharon, Hal is survived by his children Kathy (John Raffetto) and Chuck (Sue nee Wilson); four grandchildren, Molly, Alice (David Phillips), Katie and Michael; and two great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his brother, Ralph (Gale Schwartzberg) Bergen of Northbrook. In addition to his late wife, Molly (1930-1974), he was preceded in death by his parents, Ida and Charles. In lieu of flowers, donations in Hal’s memory may be made to Pets Are Worth Saving (PAWS) (www.pawschicago.org), a top-rated homeless animal shelter, medical and adoption organization. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 16, at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd., (at Niles Center Rd.) Skokie. Interment will be at Shalom Cemetery. Sharon, my deepest condolences. I always loved listening to all of Hal's stories.

My cousin Hal has always been an important part of our family. He was loved and he was respected. I would say he was a role model.

First impressions...he was tall, dark, and handsome.

I later knew him as a devoted husband, father, brother...and grandfather.

And still later I realized his outstanding leadership qualities which he generously contributed in his successful career and his substantial contributions to his community.

My husband, Neil, and I were fortunate to know Hal not only as a cousin, but, also, socially. We spent many fun and stimulating evenings... with Molly and with Sharon. Losing Molly at such an early age was a real tragedy for Hal...and for all of the family. But he was lucky from another perspective: he was blessed to have found two very special women with whom he had a real love affair.

His 'golden years' were long and challenging. But he faced them with that same resilient spirit we always witnessed. His mind was sharp; his memory rich in detail and wisdom; and he was surrounded by love.

Hal and my father Aaron "Bud" H Rotman were good friends through life, becoming separated after WWII, when the Rotman's moved to Los Angeles. I had the pleasure of meeting Hal in 1965 when I traveled to Chicago to compete in the US National cycling championships. In the 1980's Aaron traveled to Chicago to visit family, I went with him on the drive from Washington DC where I was an officer in the US Public Health Service at the National Institutes of Health. That is the last face to face meeting Hal and Aaron had that I know of. I know flights of Angels have already winged Hal to his favorite resting place.

My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, especially to Kathy and Chuck. I spent many weekend afternoons over at the Bergen household in Jr Hi and High school and always remember how warm and approachable 'Mr Bergen' was. Whenever there was a rare sibling spat between the 2, I always remember hearing the words...'In the course of 10 years , it will all even out." which then infuriated the 2 siblings but which was undoubtedly wise and true.
Again my heartfelt condolences to all who knew him.
with love,

Hal was a pleasure to have at our home at selfhelp, he was a great addition to the community, He never was or said any time that he was disappointed in joining The Selfhelpers, he attended parties, celebrations, he always had time and patients to talk to staff about his experiences, his respect for human being had no bounders. he always had suggestions never critical but positive, his laugh will be missed by everyone that knew him and had the pleasure to know the man that aged with grace.

The Bergens moved to Braeside when my dear friend Kathy and I were in 4th grade.
Hal and Molly were so much fun to be around and always made me feel so welcome in their comfortable happy home on Pierce Road.
Kathy and Chuck, I will miss seeing your Dad again. I was hoping for another lively round of reminiscing like the one we had last year.

Kathy, to all who knew and loved your dad, I send wishes of condolence, and hopes that you have many fond memories.
Hal's stories from the Nuremberg trials, where he was, I believe, a sound technician, were not only fascinating, but also chilling. I wish I'd gotten to know him outside of that.
May you be blessed with many memories of Hal.

I will miss Hal. I got to know him and his lovely wife Sharon at Self-Help where I volunteer. This was such a loving couple and they were so romantic together. He was alway
dressed well and was so handsome and towered over the other residents.

Hal loved all the musical concerts and he never missed a concert or ice cream afterwards. He had his favorite place and Sharon was placed beside his one "good ear" so they could whisper to one another. Sharon was a stalwart Sunday visitor. But on Sundays she did not attend, I always made sure Hal was brought to the performances. May he rest in peace. He lived a long fulfilling life to a ripe age we all wish we lived to. And he married twice successfully and I know how much joy Sharon brought to him and visa versa.
