SAMUEL CUTRARA

I am a half-second cousin once removed of Joan. I had a great-great-grandmother (Tzaitel Rubin) who was married twice. I am a descendant of her first husband, Eliyahu Suess, and Joan was a descendant of her second husband, Tzemakh Lopert. When I was about 18 and Joan was about 20, an uncle of Joan, David Baron, founded a family club, and these two branches would get together twice a year: in the summer at a picnic at a public park on the North Side and in December at Chanukah party at the fieldhouse in a public park on the North Side. It was in this context that I met Joan and many other relatives around my age who were very congenial and also very intellectual. I looked forward to these semi-annual get-togethers and became socially friendly with Joan and Bernie and several other members of this group. When I became married to Roberta, she also took to these cousins and developed an excellent rapport with them. We socialized with Bernie and Joan occasionally, and after meeting by chance a few times, we arranged to have tickets adjoining them at Northlight Theatre, and would often have dinner with them before or after the show. We also have a commonality with Joan as Roberta and I are both alumni of the University of Chicago and Joan received her master’s degree from the University of Chicago.
May Joan rest in peace and may her husband, children and grandchildren be comforted among the mourners for Zion and Jerusalem.
Fondly, Chuck and Roberta Bernstein
