I have such fond, caring memories of Ernest. One of those more prominent, He guided me through the very difficult process of buying
an engagement ring for my wife. As with everything I’ve seen him do, he had such an easy- going, graceful manner turning a difficult process into a joy . May his memory forever be a blessing.
All our love, Stephen, Rebekah, Aviva and Gavriel

Ernest was one of a kind. A rationalist and a man of faith. A realist and an optimist. Like his parents before him, he found refuge in a foreign land and made it his own. A sweet man. A dreamer. An armchair philosopher who never tired of saying, “We must do what we can.” And that he earnestly did — for his family, his clients, his friends. How to take the measure of such a man? He was truly a gem, cut by gauge.

Our love to Anthea and the family.

My beloved family,

My heart is with you all. I can’t imagine the magnitude of the loss of someone who holds such a profound space in our lives, hearts and memories.

I will forever hold dear the lessons Ern inspired in me. I learned from his strength of character and opinion, his unwavering understanding, and his always openness to growing and exploring a deeper awareness through reading, questioning, and talking. Whether about politics, philosophy or the world, as he saw it, Ern dedicated himself to deepening knowledge and formulating a truth he lived by and consistently upheld. He had the courage to grow, encouraging a strong moral compass - not to pander, not to waiver, to live in dignity and with pride, and to treat others and expect from them the same.

Strength of character, the pursuit of truth and honesty are just a few of the many marks of his greatness.

The strength that he lived with every day was rooted in the love of his family and will continue to root his beloved family going forward. Ernest’s pride in his Judaism, family and role as a nurturing patriarch are embedded in his legacy through his children, grandchildren relatives and friends.

I am blessed with so many memories of walking and talking with Ern about life, the future and ultimately building a great life – a principled, secure, life surrounded by family, and friends and peppered with humour—Ernest’s gift of speaking with concise clarity and enduring optimism.

From his special Chicago city bench, Deerfield meandering, to Florida sunning, I have enjoyed and appreciated the knowledge he boldly imparted. Sharing stories, experiences, dreams, and worldviews, we appreciated nature, people, and life’s richest, simplest blessings. Watching seasons change, suns set, children grow, and flowers bloom, he understood and thrived because of his humility, belief, realism and hope. As Ern once said; “We must ensure optimism, and humor, as spring is starting to appear, it must give us confidence.”

I wish we could be together to celebrate Ern’s life, the enduring mark of his remarkable courage, determination, and inspiration.

All my love, comfort and prayers,

Jade

A fitting memorial - our heart and prayers go out to Anthea, Dylan, Dana , Mims and all the wonderful grandchildren.

Ernest was everything you all had to say about him and more. A friend, a brother a legend who had such an influence
on us all. Like you - we will miss his keen personal interest, mature advice, encouragement, insight , humour and unfailing love of literature and the arts. Ernest was reading Alexander Dumas at 12 while the rest of us were reading The Hardy Boys.

My first recollection of Ernest goes back to being 6 years old. On a dusty corner of Percelia Johannesburg. 1950.
