OBITUARY
Dr. Jerome J. Hausman was a pioneer in the field of art education. In 2008, the National Art Education Association named him Art Educator of the Year. During a career that lasted more than six decades, he served as President of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, head of the art department at Ohio State University, Vice President of the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and as professor at New York University. He also served as an advisor to the philanthropist John D. Rockefeller III. In his later years Jerry moved to Evanston, Illinois, lectured at colleges around the country, including Chicago’s School of the Art Institute, and mentored artists, teachers and students through Urban Gateways and the Evanston Art Center. He was married to the late Flora Hausman, nee Siman and had three daughters, broadcast news reporter Sandy Hausman, attorney Madelynn Hausman and opera director Leah Hausman. Jerry was devoted to his six grandchildren: Michael and Ellie Schott, Sam and Ilana Hamer, Ben and Theo Scholefield and to his great granddaughter Flora Jane Schott. He treasured the friendship of sons-in-law Brian Hamer, Alan Scholefield and Dean Schott and was grateful for the loyal and compassionate care provided by Bob Stawiarski, Barbara Okrzesik and Jeanine Thomas. Jerry was a WWII veteran and always a Brooklyn Dodgers fan, having grown up a short walk from Ebbets Field. Until the very end of his life, he retained a photographic memory of decades of baseball he had witnessed. Graveside Service Wednesday, 2:00 PM at Memorial Park Cemetery, (Section Beth Olam) 9900 Gross Point Road, Skokie.
