OBITUARY

It is with great sadness that we announce the recent death of Dr. David R. Beach. Dave was Associate Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, where he taught for 35 years until his retirement in 2007. Dave was a lover of music and a passionate advocate for peace and social justice. With his late partner, Carmen Rigau, Dave funded music scholarships and enabled UW-Parkside to host guest artists, including “Harmony in the Holy Land,” a joyful day of interfaith workshops and performances. A true humanist, Dave was a member of Kol Hadash Humanistic Congregation of Deerfield, IL. Previously, Dave was associated with the Olympia Brown Unitarian Universalist Church in Racine, WI.
A memorial service for David Beach will be held at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside's Francis Bedford Concert Hall, 900 Wood Road in Kenosha WI on Monday, February 17th at 12:45 PM, with interment at Graceland Cemetery in Racine to follow. The memorial service will be streamed through www.chicagojewishfunerals.com, and a recording will be available there after the service. Tribute donations in memory of Dave may be made to any of the following organizations that were important to Dave: Kol Hadash Humanistic Congregation www.kolhadash.com/payment.php, The Klezmer Music Foundation www.klezmermusicfoundation.org/donate-1, or UW Parkside www.uwp.edu/giving/beach.cfm
Zekher tsadik livrakha –the memory of a good person is a blessing (Proverbs 10:7)

On November 30th, 2016, Dr. David Beach sponsored a day of workshops and performances for students, faculty, and the community at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Here are clips from that event, which was a huge success and furthered his vision of interfaith harmony through musical collaboration.

So sorry for the loss of this good man. I had him as a professor during my education at UW Parkside in the mid 1990's and graduated with a BS in Psychology. I learned so very much from his teaching. I then became a colleague as I am (still) a police officer at UW Parkside. He will be missed.

I met Dave in 1981 when I was a newly minted phd, was a close colleague with him until his retirement, and a fellow parishioner at OBUCC. He always made me feel welcome. Dave had a strong sense of social justice and a good sense of humor. He was a real asset to his community.

Dave was a good man. My staff and I got to know him very well as we helped transport him 3 times a week for his medical needs. He will be missed. We had many good conversations together.

I was still a student at UW Parkside when I had the pleasure of acting in a play with Dave. One summer Dave was in an Agatha Christie play, the Spiders' Web. He played the Colonel of course! And did a fine job in the role. I never had him for class but I know he was instrumental in advising a family member of mine to pursue her PhD. She just retired after a full career as a school psychologist. He made a difference.

I met Dave Beach in June of 2007 when he was newly retired and began attending weekly Music & More concerts at First Presbyterian Church in Racine. I was the new organizer of the summer concert series that had been running since 1993, and Dave’s encouragement, support, and advice were important to me as I found my footing. Dave was always the first to arrive and he sat in the pew with his crossword and Sudoku puzzle books as he waited for the concert to start. Over the years, we became friends and for many years he was the largest financial donor for Music & More. Dave supported many arts and music programs in southeastern WI, and we served together on the Racine Symphony Orchestra Board. During one of our last conversations, Dave told me that of all the programs he sponsored, Music & More was his favorite. He liked the M&M format of featuring three short acts during the hour with a variety of genres. For several years, I’ve used one of his complimentary quotes on the M&M web page: “The format and talent have made it my favorite musical performance. Tops!” Dave made our community a better place and brought joy to many through his generous music sponsorships. He will be fondly remembered and truly missed.

David was a generous contributor to the Racine Literacy Council’s 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign and the purchase of the RLC building at 734 Lake Ave. He served as President of the RLC during my last year (2015) as Executive Director. He gave much to his community. Years earlier I had the privilege of taking two classes taught by him at UW Parkside. And, His love of music was contagious!
