OBITUARY

Donald A. Statland, age 84, beloved husband of Iris Ruth Statland nee Drucker. Loving father of Lisa Joy Statland and Howard Todd (Brookelynn) Statland. Cherished grandfather of Joshua Isaac, Zachary Avram and Jude Harrison. Dear brother of Rhona (the late Gerardo) Statland DeLopez. Don was born in Brooklyn, New York where he lived until he graduated from Brooklyn College at the age of 20. After serving in the Medical Corps of the United States Army, he returned to New York City to attend New York University School of Law.
His impressive career includes serving as a legal advisor in the Office of the General Counsel to the United States Secretary of the Treasury, located in Washington, D.C., before working as a trial attorney in the Tax Division of the United States Department of Justice (DOJ). While working in the DOJ, Don became licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in the District of Columbia. Don then moved to Chicago where he entered private practice and then left to form his own practice working with individuals, large and small corporations, corporate officers, partnerships, estates, trusts, tax exempt entities and other taxpayers in overcoming their federal and state tax problems at all levels of the tax system. Don achieved the impressive distinction of being rated AV Preeminent®, which is the highest rating attorneys can achieve for their legal ability and professional ethics under the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Ratings System. He was frequently sought out by other attorneys and Certified Public Accountants when handling tax issues that they are unable to resolve, and was often called upon to provide expert testimony on taxes in court proceedings. Don was active in the community through his participation in various legal and philanthropic organizations, including membership in the Chicago Bar Association where he served as the former Chairman of the Federal Court Procedure Committee, and the Federal Tax Litigation Committee. He was also an active ember in the Chicago Literary Club, on the Board of Directors of Great Books Foundation, and a member of the Union League Club.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 7 at Sunset Memorial Lawns Cemetery, Northbrook. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Solomon Schechter Day School, 3210 Dundee Road, Northbrook, IL 60022 www.schechter.org/tribute would be appreciated.

I'll always remember Don as one of my dad's best friends. After dad's death, the Statland family remained a part of mom's and my life for many years.

Rest easy, Don. <3

Iris: Maddy and I were very say to learn that Don had passed away. I so much appreciated his warmth and his willingness to share his wisdom and legal stories. I wish I had remembered that he had worked in the Tax Division of DOJ since our son worked there as a summer law intern the summer before last. I know that he cared deeply about his family. Our deep condolences. May his memory be for a blessing. Brian Hamer
