OBITUARY

Sherwood “Woody” L. Levin passed peacefully in his neighborhood on Tuesday, December 15. He was 79 and died the way he wanted it, without any fuss or attention. A Chicago native, Sherwood “Woody” spent his childhood in South Shore until he married and moved to the Northwest Suburbs. Woody was a prominent Chicago attorney who practiced criminal defense for many years alongside his brother Herbert Levin and attorneys Stuart Dubin and Daniel Weise. He served his profession with integrity, compassion, humility, and respect. Woody practiced at both the Federal and State levels. His clientele ranged from all walks of life to persons sitting on death row. He is best known for being a tireless champion for justice, as well as a family man, loyal friend, and mentor to many in the legal community. He was a member of several bar associations.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Bonnie Levin. According to family and friends everyone gave (bet) the marriage would only last six months due to the 20+ year age difference but to everyone’s surprise it lasted over 37 years and Woody collected on those bets. Their union was something to marvel. One of their passions together was their love for Collies. A total of 3 collies all named “Girl”. Another passion he had is for cars and relaxing (sleeping/snoring) on his boat. He was a huge Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs fan watching endless games with his late father-in-law. During the Pandemic, his TV served as his lifeline to the world. He expressed his only frustration was when he momentarily (in his words, actually longer because he would be sitting on it) could not locate his TV remote.

Dear brother of the late Herbert Levin (the late Patricia); fond brother-in-law of Michael, Cindy and (the late Mary); dear uncle to nine nieces and nephews.
He will be fondly remembered by great sense of humor with perfect timing even though he was a quiet man in nature by his family, friends, and the legal community. To keep everyone safe and healthy, the interment service will be private with family and close friends.
