OBITUARY
Carol Siegel Shapiro, 90, passed away peacefully at home with loved ones on October 24, 2018. Carol was born October 30, 1927, in Jaroslaw, Poland. She is preceded in death by husband Ralph, sister Hela, and brothers Henek and Mendek. Both Holocaust survivors, Carol and Ralph lived in Paris before settling in Richmond in 1952, where they raised a family and ran a business together. She was an active member of the Jewish and Holocaust survivor communities. Carol made many lifelong friends in Richmond and they could often be found sitting around her kitchen table, talking, laughing, and playing mahjong. After more than 50 years in Richmond, Carol moved to the Weinberg Community for Senior Living in Deerfield, Illinois, to be closer to her son Jack and daughter-in-law Virginia. Carol was a popular resident of the Weinberg community and she loved, and was loved, by friends of Jack and Virginia. Carol will be remembered for her kind and generous spirit, positive outlook on life, a genuine love for America, and her sweet laugh. She is the true definition of a survivor and will remain an inspiration to her family and friends. Carol is survived by her sons Jack (Virginia) and Randy (Shauna); granddaughter Amy; grandsons Nick (Jaime) and Alex (Kara); sister-in-law Chaya; and her many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.
