OBITUARY

Dr. George Meschel, 88, beloved husband of Susan, loving father of Judith Meschel and Eva (Jason) Sagan, grandfather of Jared Sagan and Ashlyn Sagan, uncle of Noam Meschel and cousin of Robert Neufeld and Stephen Neufeld, predeceased by his brother Nisan (Miriam) Meschel.

George's dignity and sense of humor prevailed through many very difficult circumstances. He was born in Budapest, Hungary. As a child he survived the Holocaust and lost many family members. A talented musician, he attended the Liszt Music Academy in Budapest. After the Russian Army defeated the Hungarian uprising for freedom in 1956, he escaped to Austria. Subsequently he emigrated to the United States and settled in Chicago, where he married Susan and earned a PhD in clinical psychology at the University of Chicago. He served for 38 years as Chief of Psychology Services at the West Side Veterans Administration Hospital.

After his retirement he joined the Lyric Opera Lecture Corps and gave many talks about the season's operas throughout Chicago and its suburbs.

He was a wonderful husband and took great pride in his children and grandchildren. He kept in touch with his brother's family in Israel and with his cousins in Sweden.

Services Wednesday 11:30AM at Congregation Rodfei Zedek, 5200 South Hyde Park Boulevard, Chicago. Interment Waldheim.

I only met George once in person, but he impressed me as a very fine, gentle, intelligent human being, and I would like to convey my heartfelt sympathy to the family Susan with whom I had many enjoyable conversations, and to Judy and Eva.
May he rest in peace.

It was an honor and a delight to get to know George Meschel at Passover seders. I will always remember his ability to rise above harrowing personal experience, the warmth he extended to people, and his love of music. I thank his daughter Judy for sharing her extraordinary parents.

May his memory be a blessing and may all his mourners find comfort,
Fran T.
