I am devastated to learn of Sam's passing. Sam was a friend of Hattie's and I frequently heard stones of their friendship in high school and learned they recently reconnected. Hattie was looking forward to working with Sam at Lettuce this summer. I am so sorry for your loss . He touched our lives and we are grateful for that.

My deepest condolences to your family. Sam was a wonderful, caring person, who always had a smile on his face. He will be greatly missed. I will forever cherish the button he thoughtfully made for me and my friend in high school. Sam was so caring and was always there to lend a helping land for me. Whether it was making my posters to run for student class president or doing a funny dance to get me to laugh through the days at Lincoln Park High School. Sam not only helped me though. He was devoted to helping others, even those he did not know. Sam reached out to me recently and shared about his work helping low income people do taxes. I was also excited to hear that Sam was going to be working at the same company as me this summer, and devastated to learn the news of his passing. I am so sorry for your loss and can’t imagine how difficult this must be.

Sam was a brilliant student in my public speaking class during his first year at Butler. He always arrived to class early, allowing us a few minutes of small talk each day before the rest of the class arrived. His joy shined brightly to all of his peers. Thank you for raising one of the kindest and most caring people I have ever known. Please know the entire Butler community sends our love and condolences to your family. Sam's legacy is forever preserved in all of our hearts.

Sam was one of my student employees at Butler University. Sam was an exceptional employee and, beyond that, an extraordinary person. He truly had a heart of gold. His kindness knew no bounds, and his ability to make connections with anyone and everyone was unmatched. Sam’s authenticity shone through in everything he did, and his presence brought an abundance of joy and laughter to our workplace and our lives. His light will continue to shine in our memories. Sam will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

I feel so lucky to have worked with Sam during his time as a student employee in Online Education and Educational Technology at Butler University. His warmth, humor, and generosity made a mark on everyone he met. Whether through a quiet kindness or a perfectly timed joke, Sam had a way of making people feel seen and valued. I will carry memories of his kindness and light with me always. Wishing comfort and peace to all who loved him.

Dear Fingard Family,

I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved son Sam. While I didn't know him personally, I knew of him through mutual friends and know he was a light in many lives on Butler's campus. Words cannot begin to describe the heavy heart I have for your family. From what I know, he was very involved on campus with Hillel and Advocates 4 Autism, and brought a smile to a lot of faces. He was a genuine guy, and it's an admirable trait to have, and I truly believe he saw the good in people. My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this time. Sam will always be a reminder in my life to see the good in people.

Fingard Family,
My son Josh had multiple classes with Sam as they had the same major and were both Juniors. He said that Sam was always very nice and that he is going to miss sitting by him in his classes. It sounds like your son touched many people and we are so very sorry for your loss.

I never got to know Sam, but I will say that his strength of character and willingness to help others was extremely admirable. A strong community presence and a heart of gold was just a few of the best things I heard about Sam. As a member of the Jewish community and as a human being, it saddens me beyond comprehension at his passing. He represented the values and principles that I would aspire for and his work seemed to always reflect for the betterment of all. From myself, my family, and my community, we send you love and strength during these times.

I didn’t know Sam, but felt a connection with him every time I would type my Butler email in with ‘sfi’ and his name would pop up ahead of mine. I thought of him as my email buddy! It’s funny how humans form silly little connections with people they’ve never met and how much of an impact that can have.
Rest easy, Sam.

Sam was in my FYS course two years ago. He was a joy to have in class. He said what he was thinking and engaged others in conversation. I enjoyed teaching him, and could tell he enjoyed learning. He always had a smile on his face. It's was a pleasure having such an engaged student in class, who also took the time to understand others' ideas and thoughts.

I hope that his family can find peace in this very difficult time. I'm so sorry for your loss.

My deepest sympathy to the Fingard Family. Getting to know Sam this year was truly a pleasure. He’d always say hi to me around campus, showed up countless events and put his all into everything he did. His dedication in academics, the Chicago teams and he supported, his friends, and overall support of the Butler Community never stopped. We are going to miss him dearly on the campus and know that he made a lasting impact with his kindness and being a true example of a bulldog. I will miss hearing his infectious laugh, Jack Box nights, and simple hellos. The Fingard family truly raised a great man.

While I did not get the privilege of truly knowing Sam, he was very active on campus and put his entire self into helping others in any way he could. When my group and I were tabling for our Real Business Experience class, he was the ONLY person to come and talk to us… that absolutely says something about the quality of man your family raised. Sam put so much effort into serving people around him and he will be truly missed. He is absolutely irreplaceable and his impact on the students and faculty of Butler will not be forgotten. With how much this has shaken the Butler community, I can only imagine how deeply your family is hurting- my sincerest condolences.

Dearest Fingard family and friends,

Please know that Sam was truly valued, appreciated and adored by so many of the Butler University faculty, staff and students! As the Lacy School of Business staff member at the front desk of Dugan Hall I had the great privilege of knowing Sam and sharing conversations with him on a regular basis. He was always engaging, exuberant and truly a joy to spend time with! I especially valued our time together problem-solving different opportunities he was contemplating. Whether it was an upcoming employer event or class option, I was very honored that he valued my input regarding his college journey. Thank you for sharing Sam with us! He has left a legacy of kindness, compassion and joy that will be spread throughout the Butler community to honor his memory.

May God bless and keep you in his loving arms as you walk through this difficult time of loss and beyond!

Dear Fingard family,

I am so very sorry. I got to know Sam through my role at The Compass Center at Butler University. He helped welcome me to Butler. We got to know each other over the past two years. Sam is one of the most kind, most generous, most gentle people I have ever known. Seeing him always made a difference in my day. Knowing him made a difference in my life.

I hope knowing this gives some comfort. My heart is with you.

I had the pleasure of working with Sam in Butler's Online Education and Educational Technology (OEET) office. He always went above and beyond to be helpful and make others' lives better. Each day, I continue to hear about how he positively impacted everyone who interacted with him, as was true with the experiences I always had with him. He was truly one of a kind and Butler was lucky to have him for three years he was here. May you find comfort in knowing Sam was an amazing person and as everyone has reflected on their times with him, they always express the joy of those interactions. We are all better for meeting Sam!

Dear Fingard Family,

Please accept my deepest condolences for the loss of Sam. I knew him through Hillel and Delta Alpha Pi and he was always such a light. We were always first in line to get food during Shabbat dinner and he always offered to help carry my plates up the stairs. Despite Sam having his own struggles, he always helped others through theirs’, I am eternally grateful for the kindness that he showed me when I felt alone. My parents even remember talking to him at family Shabbat one year, chatting about the food, Chicago, and the Cubs of course. He left a mark on every person he met, he will be remembered for the rest of time. May his memory forever be a blessing.

Sam and I were both regular members of a small tight knit club at BU. I enjoyed his drive to be involved and his positive presence. I always looked forward to seeing him at our events and reading his messages in our group chat. We liked to talk about some of our interests together, one of his being accounting and taxes. One of my favorite memories of Sam was seeing his joy shine when he told me about how excited he was about passing a test from the IRS that would allow him to do taxes for people other than himself. He was so proud of his hard work paying off and offered to do all of our taxes for free. May his memory be a blessing.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Sam's passing. Having had the privilege of being his teacher for four years, I can confidently say that he was one of the brightest, kindest, and most charismatic individuals I've ever known. His heart of gold touched everyone around him, and I am grateful for the moments we shared.

Sam made me not only a better teacher but a better person as well. His presence was a gift, and he will always be remembered for his warmth, intelligence, and generosity. My thoughts are with you during this incredibly difficult time.

With heartfelt sympathy.

Dear Kara and Richard and Dani,

Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time. We can not begin to comprehend what you’re feeling - no mother or father should lose a son (especially one so young and just beginning his adult life) and no sibling should lose their best friend.

I wish I had met Sam - based on those who knew him and from the fact, Richard and Kara, he was your son, I know I would have loved him.

Sam will always be on my mind.

Love, Elizabeth (and Bob and Brittany)
