OBITUARY
Shirlee Goldman-Herzog nee Sobel, 99
Beloved daughter of the late George & Gertrude (Barmash) Sobel and dear sister of the late Jordan Howard (the late Willa) Sobel. Beloved wife of the late Marshall Goldman and the late Roger Herzog. Loving mother of Judy (the late Donald) Martin, Marilyn (Fred) Oskin, Barbara Goldman-Wartell and Patti (Rick Kirst) Goldman. Cherished grandmother of Tovah (Jimmy), Aaron, Jodi (Robert), Sam (Julie), Mandy (Everett), Jeremy (Jenna), Michael (Rebecca), MiRit (Justin), Martin, Ari, and Ethan (Ellie). Treasured great-grandmother of Nathan, Elizabeth, Jadon, Oliver, Madison, Jacob, Avery, Augustus, Joshua, Asa, Asher, Noa, Rosemary, and Amira. Shirlee was born and raised in Chicago before she married her high school sweetheart and moved to Aurora, Illinois where they raised their 4 daughters and many dogs. She was a lover of the arts and literature, a lifelong learner and enjoyed traveling the globe. She was passionate about many social justice causes including empowering women, health care and abortion access, gun control, church state separation, civil rights and was committed to equality and equity for all. A past president of local chapters of the National Council of Jewish Women, League of Women Voters, Aurora Mental Health Center and the Chicago Great Lakes Region of the UAHC (now URJ), Shirlee found ways to take leadership roles in organizations that were important to her. She was active in her congregations through the years and was on the North American Board of the UAHC and the UAHC Commission for Social Action. Shirlee was a dog lover, and made sure to point out every dog that would pass. She was very good with her hands, and was an amateur seamstress, took pleasure in needlepoint, and enjoyed cooking and baking. An avid sports fan, she had a particular love for basketball and baseball, especially for the Cubs. Above everything else, those who knew her know she was proud of the legacy she left behind in her daughters, grandchildren, their significant others, and her great grandchildren. To honor Shirlee’s lifelong commitment to social justice and advocacy, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (rac.org) or the National Council of Jewish Women’s Jewish Fund for Abortion Access (www.jewsforabortionaccess.org/the-fund) would be appreciated.
