OBITUARY

Rabbi Mark S. Shapiro, 85, died peacefully after suffering from Parkinson's Disease for the past six years. Mark served as beloved rabbi of Congregation B'nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim (BJBE) from 1962-2000, and as rabbi emeritus for the remainder of his life. He was an adored mentor, teacher and spiritual leader to many, and was particularly proud of his dozens of students who later became Jewish professionals. Mark was a lifelong White Sox fan, a season ticket holder for several years, and his special affinity for the South Siders was well known to his community. He grew up in the South Shore of Chicago, attended Hyde Park High School, University of Chicago and was ordained from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati in 1959. He and his beloved wife Hanna (nee Raunheim) shared a longtime love for the State of Israel and traveled there many times during their life together. He was also devoted to social justice, and proudly marched with other religious leaders in Selma, Alabama with Dr. King in 1965. Loving father of Stephen (Rachel) Shapiro, Eliot (Ellyn) Shapiro and David Shapiro. Proud grandfather of Natalie, Noah and Rose. Cherished brother of Benjamin (Barbara) Shapiro. Treasured uncle, great uncle, cousin and friend to many. To keep everyone safe and healthy, the service at the congregation and the interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to three organizations that meant a great deal to Rabbi Shapiro over the years: Congregation B'nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim, 1201 Lake Cook Road, Deerfield, Illinois 60015 www.bjbe.org; Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute, 1121 Lake Cook Road, Suite D, Deerfield, Illinois 60015, osrui.org/give/; or Yad LaKashish-Lifeline for the Old in Jerusalem, P.O. Box 494, Englewood, New Jersey 07631, donation.lifeline.org.il/

I am so sad to hear of Rabbi Shapiro's illness and passing and will always remember his kindness & guidance to our family over many years. My children Sandy & David loved and respected Rabbi Shapiro very much. My late husband Jerry & I were so grateful to have had him as our rabbi and friend. His life was truly a blessing to us and so many others.
I send my heartfelt condolences to Hanna and the Shapiro family.

I was so sorry to hear about Mark. Though I do not believe I ever met him, I had heard his sermons as a guest and â?? knewâ? him thru his congregants who adored him. Having known Ben and Barbara for over 50 years also gave me insight into the wonderful and brilliant man he was. My heart goes out to all the family over your loss. Michele Vold

Rabbi Shapiro was a wonderful story teller. I remember as a child going to Friday night services and waiting all night not for the treats, like the brownies, cookies, Challah bread, or the sherbet fruit-punch but for him to get to his sermon, how he related the torah portion to one of lifeâ??s lessons or experiences he had. I remember the excitement he had when BJBE received a holocaust torah and when I began to studying for my Bar mitzvah with Rabbi Shapiro and I learned I would read my Torah portion for that Torah. I would get to touch a part of the history of our people. The hours he spent helping me learn to read Hebrew with out vowels. I consider myself one of the luckiest people in this world because I had the chance to have this teacher, this leader, this Rabbi touch my life, to help me find faith. Last thing I want to say is thank you to Rabbi Shapiroâ??s family for sharing him with the Jewish Community.

When I was a child I remember my parents told me "your family from Chicago are coming, be nice to them".
I met Mark & Hannah and immediately noticed how nice, kind and funny they were.
Mark came to me for the first time and told me "Hi, My name is Mark, in Hebrew you write it like 'MARAK' (soup in Hebrew), but hey, don't eat me!".
Mark was brilliant, extremely nice and very curious about Israel, my family and me as well.
Mark is someone that everyone should have met in his life. You can learn so much from his knowledge and acceptness.
Deepest sympathy, and condolences to anyone who knew Mark.
Mark will always be in our thoughts.
