GUEST BOOK

We encourage you to share your personal condolences and stories of Stuart Levin below and we will share them with the family.
*Email and phone numbers will NOT be displayed online

We are sending our sincere condolences on the passing of Dr. Stuart Levin. I (Carol) lived across the street from the Levins. My parents were Holocaust survivors. Stuart always treated my parents with respect and admiration. They in turn admired and marveled how Stuart would come home from a long day in the hospital and tend to his garden in his dress pants! I was the family babysitter and saw first hand a loving home with beautiful children owing to Bobbie's multitasking skills as wife/partner to a physician.. When I expressed an interest in becoming a physician, Stuart was very encouraging.; a woman physician was a novel concept at that time. As life would have it, when I first met Gordy at the local JCC swimming pool over 50 years ago, we struck up a conversation which centered on his experiences as a Rush medical student. I told him I lived across the street from Dr Stuart Levin ...and that was how Gordy retrieved my phone number. Well the rest is history.
Stuart was a special kind of physician-one who is a role model as a health professional and identified Jew.
His memory is a blessing to us. Carol Rosenberg Derman and Gordy Derman

I was so blessed to have had the opportunity to see Dr. levin as a medical student and alumni of Rush Medical College. He was a brilliant physician and a great and engaging teacher and lecturer. I am sure that there are not many of my fellow alumni physicians at Rush who would not recall and have the good fortune of seeing or engaging with Dr. Levin during their course of training. He was a brilliant thinker and a great medical educator who left quite a legacy at Rush and I am sure many medical institutions through his influential career. May his memories be of blessing. I was saddened to hear of Stu's passing. He and I were fortunate to train under Cliff Pilz a t the West Side VA. As a student, a Fellow, and later as a Program Director I had multiple opportunities to engage with Stu. He was an extremely intelligent, compassionate, and mentoring individual. His legion of students, residents, and fellows will continue to practice medicine in his manner. It is a worthy legacy.

To me its like the end of an era. I knew Stuart from the band at Marshall HS on Chicago's old West Side and then thru the many years from West Rogers Park and a very close friendship . I had high praises for him and he always flattered me.
Our discussions were deep and our "arguments" sometimes fierce but always with great respect. On 2 recent occasions, both erev Pesach, I called Stuart to evaluate a travelling granddaughter's medical condition as she was hospitalized in a remote part of the world. In both cases he contacted her, evaluated her over the phone and encouraged her to fly home alone and she would be fine joining her family for the holiday and of course, Stuart was right.
My friendship with Bobbie is treasured and I always shared warm greetings with Stuart whenever I visited. He always asked about my family many of whom he knew and he showed interest and admiration.
Seventy years is a long time to maintain a friendship and I am happy to have shared so many occasions with him and usually with his family. Stuart was one of a kind and he will be missed by many but mostly by his treasured "eyshes chayil". Leah Polin

I am so very sorry to hear about Stu. I met Stu when I was in medical school at the University of Illinois (Class 1970). Like many of my classmates, I took an elective in Infectious Diseases to learn from the most brilliant physician and the kindest and most delightful man that I have ever encountered. Like many students and physicians who spent time with Stu, I decided that I was going to become an internist and speicalize in ID like Dr. Levin. When I was in the Air Force, my interests changed, and I became intrigued by anesthesia and intensive care medicine. But I also wanted to study Infectious Diseases like Stu.
I really didn't know what to do, so I called up Stu to ask for his advice.

Here's what he said:

"You finished medical school and your internship...you already have the frosting on the cake. Your specialty, that's just the frosting on the frosting. Whatever you' decide will be the right decision."

He was, of course, correct, and I thoroughly enjoyed my career as an obstetric anesthesiologist. I will always remember Stu.

BD”H. I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Levin’s death. He and his beautiful wife, Bobbie, were friends of our family at Congregation Ezras Israel. As a radio reporter, whenever there was any news story involving infectious diseases, I always called Dr. Levin as an expert source and he was unfailingly gracious and generous with his time and expertise. And even in the final years of his career, he helped to arrange Shabbat accommodations for my daughter when she did her medical residency at Rush. He was a true mensch! My condolences to Bobbie and all his descendants.
