Herbie was my boss for 25 years. He was a great mentor and supervisor. On a personal vein, he was sweet, kind, generous dramatic and funny! I will miss him dearly... Someone so special can never be forgotten!

I worked with Herbie at Alper Services for a few years. Herbie was a truly sweet man who always greeted you with a smile. Above all, he was patient. He genuinely enjoyed teaching and sharing his knowledge and experiences. He left quite a mark on my heart and I wish nothing but peace and comfort to his dear family and friends at this time of morning. Rest easy, Herbie. Hugs!

How does one go about eulogizing a dear friend. I think it’s best to just talk from the heart and with love for the person you will miss. Harold & Herb had been collaborating in the insurance industry for many years, actually for years before I even met Herb. At a certain point, Herb & Harold decided to include their spouses in the friendship and we began getting together as couples. This began a beautiful relationship between the 4 of us. We shared many dinners together, even attended some insurance trips together. Once Herb & Arlene moved to Florida, there was not a trip to Chicago, that we missed seeing them. It was a top priority on both of our parts. If you knew Herb, as I’m sure you all did, you didn’t get away scott free from getting into intimate deep conversations about emotions and feelings. Regardless of whatever might have been going on in Herbs life, he was always ready to invest himself in discussing your issues, your problems, whatever it might have been you were struggling with. Once Harold was diagnosed with his disease, regardless of what Herb was dealing with medically, his and Arlene’s concern for Harold was as deep as it would be from a family member. As a matter of fact Herb and Arlene are family to us. You don’t need to share DNA to consider someone family.

Herb was a fierce defender of his family and friends and took it quite personally when he felt people he loved were being mistreated or dealt a bad hand. Harold considered Herb his mentor. Between both of their struggles with medical conditions, they managed to talk at least a few times a week. They shared personal issues, medical struggles, business ideas, stock ideas , so on and so forth. There will be quite a void for Harold to not have his phone calls and conversations with Herb.

Although Herb was not able to be as gregarious in recent years, we prefer to think of the outgoing Herb who insisted on getting to know every waitstaff that ever served us in a restaurant, sometimes asking them embarrassing questions. We don’t know anyone else who would spontaneously break out in song in restaurants. Herb was a character, and I say that in the most positive loving way. He was definitely a one of a kind guy. Herb, we will miss you. Arlene, we are here for you and our friendship continues so we can share all that we did with Herb.
All,our love,
Judy & Harold

From Harold:
Herb was my closest friend. We spoke almost daily. He wanted to hear about everything going on in my life and provide timely advice which I welcomed and in turn ask about his. He talked about spending much of the day watching sports and financial shows and enthusiastically updated me on the stock market. He was a major influencer in my life who taught me how to fight for what I believed to be right. With Herb at my back I felt invincible. Oh, how I miss that man! I will never forget principles that I learned from him. I love you bro!

Having been a BJBE member for more than 50 years my memories of Herb go way back and unfortunately not very current.
Severathings pop into my head
First, retreats - numerous events at camp in Oconomowox both with families and adults. Herb was the bartender and Zena the social director. Our kids knew their kids and it was great fun.
Second - at services I often thought of joining the choir and Herb was trying to recruit me. Not reading music I remember his words: Bob I can’t either so I sing what I want to and nobody notices. I didn’t Join.
Third was his earlobe fetish. He seemed to rank mine highly and a service didn’t go by without a squeezing.
Herb was unique and will be missed.
