OBITUARY

Norine Gerson nee Kaplan, age 96.
Beloved wife of the late Leon Gerson. Dear mother of Eileen Rama Gassman, Michael (Meta) Gerson, Andrea Rafaella Gerson, and Sheri Mila (Danny Kadden) Gerson. Proud grandmother of Alli (Mike) Doubek, Brandon Gassman, Ian (Ahnika) Gerson, Trevor (Katie) Gerson, Ariel Gerson, Margalit Gerson, Sigal Kadden, and Amalia Kadden. Great grandmother of ten. Nurturing and loving presence to many more.

Along with her dear younger sister Ruth, she was born on Chicago's west side to loving parents Orin and Rose. Married in 1947, Norine raised four children while working as a public school clerk and teacher assistant. She was a caring, accepting and nurturing support for many, generously expanding her circle of "family" to include friends, neighbors and strangers in need. For Norine, there was always room for one more at the table, especially for young people with nowhere to go.

Among her favorite things were opera, good soup served piping hot, hosting vast dinners on Jewish holidays and carrying on the traditions of Judaism.

Graveside service Friday 10:30 AM at Westlawn Cemetery (Section - Memorial) 7801 W Montrose Ave, Norridge, IL 60706. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to National Jewish Health, 100 North LaSalle, Suite 1612, Chicago, IL 60602 www.nationaljewish.org. My Aunt Norine was a pillar of Family. She never waivered in her commitment to her family and friends, and to living her authentic life. She embraced life and she embraced the opportunities to be a positive force in the lives of everyone around her. Norine lived each day fully and was an active participant in her life and the lives of those she cared about. As an example of a life well lived, she set a high bar. Norine, we will always remember the many times you were there for us. I will carry your memory in my heart.

I only knew Norine for a few months. But I really appreciated her friendship and chats with me. She was always gracefully welcoming and positive. I loved her smile. I thank God for Norine.

I will always hold Norine dear to my heart. She was so open with her love and caring. She was honest straightforward, and forgiving. These last few years were particularly special to us as we would meet twice a year for lunch after we had moved away from Chicago. We love you Norine Gerson. Peace...

Thank you Norine for all that you did in a life so well lived. I am forever grateful to you for taking my family in, allowing us to merge with your own, and playing the role of the matriarch to us, your own family, and so many others, oh so well. Thank you for being the grandmother to me that I otherwise never had. I would say that I will miss you, but you will always be near to me, guiding me with your own unique brand of love, humor, care, and understanding. It was an honor to play any small loving role in your life and a blessing to have you play such a meaningful role in mine. Peace, light, and love unto you and all who loved you.
In gratitude,

Norine was one of my long standing volunteers at the JUF Uptown Cafe. She always came in with a smile on her face and kind words while serving meals to some of our community's must vulnerable people. זייל. May her memory be for a blessing.

Norine was one of my favorite cousins--loving, thoughtful and delightful to talk to. We didn't get together often since I live in Florida but we did meet when I visited Chicago when possible. I will really miss her.
