OBITUARY

Harry Trosman, MD

December 9, 1924 - August 27, 2024

Harry Trosman was born in Toronto, Ontario, where he was raised and went to medical school. He moved to the United States to continue his medical training. He met his future wife, Marjorie (Mardi) Goldman, in her hometown of Cincinnati while completing his medical training there. They settled in Chicago, where he began working at the University of Chicago, and started their family. During that time, he also served as a lieutenant in the US Navy Reserves in Oceanside, California.

He worked for more than 70 years at the University of Chicago as a professor of psychiatry. He was trained as a psychoanalyst, saw psychoanalytic patients, was a teacher in the medical school, and published myriad scholarly works with a primary focus on psychoanalysis and the creative process, including two books. He was an active member of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute and the American Psychoanalytic Association.

He lived a rich life of the mind, loved literature and the visual arts, and was an enthusiastic collector of books. He loved travel, especially to Europe, and was passionate about his work and his family. He was adored by his colleagues, friends and family and will be sorely missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mardi, and is survived by his children Elizabeth (Larry), Michael (Michelle), and David (Catherine); by his grandchildren Seth, Rebecca, Max and Ben; and by his great granddaughters Nora, Amelia and Cora.

There will be a service honoring his memory on Friday, August 30, at 1:30 PM at KAM Isaiah Israel Congregation, 5039 S. Greenwood Ave, Chicago, IL 60615. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601 www.alz.org or a charity of your choice. Dear Lizzie, Michael, David, and the Trosman family,
Sending my sincerest sympathies to you all during this period of loss. I just learned of your father's death, and I am deeply saddened by this news. He means so much to me and our friendship is something I will look on fondly. I feel truly blessed to have known him and shared many wonderful memories with Dr. T. He always spoke so highly of you: his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, it felt like I knew you all. We loved chatting about plants, his career, art, and of course anything chocolate related. I once read that grief can be painful because it is the greatest expression of love. He was and is truly loved beyond a lifetime, and while we may share tears near and far, I'm comforted by the rich life he lived and that he is resting with his love, Mardi. Please know my thoughts, love, and prayers are with your during this time of grief.
With love,
Sarah (from PT at UChicago)
