Shalom, I had a dream early this morning that featured
Dr. Halper. As we do nowadays, I googled his name and found the graveside service YouTube video.
Dr. Halper was my psychiatrist from 2006-2016. I found him while I was (and continue to) working at Cook County Health HIV clinic. My father had died 2 months prior and I felt very depressed. I looked for a CBT therapist, and there was Dr. Halper, just 3 blocks away from my clinic, walking distance.

Dr. Halper was like a father figure to me. He was kind, as was my father, he could be stern, as could be my father, and he sometimes showed me his sense of humor. He helped me heal in deep ways. He introduced me to the Art Scroll prayer book, as part of my CBT. Dr. Halper then became my “family psychiatrist” as he extended his care to my darling daughter. , who was then a very young adult.
Dr. Halper took charge of the process of finding out and understanding my dtr’s leaning disabilities and inattentive ADHD. He read the previous neuropsych testing reports done when my dtr was 8 yo and 16 yo, both which said she had no issues but was careless, and told me that the testing had been incorrectly interpreted. Then he found an alternative neuropsych testing source. He began to see my dtr every other week. She was living in another state. She traveled 250 miles on the Megabus to see him. Dr. Halper, many decades older, developed a rapport with the 19 year old. In the subsequent 17 years, later, my dtr has found academic success and is starting a career as a psychotherapist, with a special nterest to n helpiing children with learning disabilities and ADHD. Dr. Halper was the catalyst.
I will always be grateful to Dr. Halper. He knew I would not “get better” bless my dtr was “getting better.”
Dr. Hamper’s memory will always be a blessing to me.
