OBITUARY
Marshall Zweig, 92, died on Friday, September 22, 2023 at Deerfield Crossing nursing home after suffering a stroke in May. Famous Chicago restaurateur served celebrities and fellow Chicagoans for many years. Marshall Zweig, everybody knew him as "Marshall", owned several restaurants in Chicago and the northern suburbs. The first Zweig's restaurant was opened in 1919 on Madison Street by Marshall's grandparents, Alexander and Bella Zweig, who immigrated from Kolomyya Galicia. The Zweig's opened the Zweig's banquet hall and cafeteria on Roosevelt Road. Many Jewish couples got married at Zweig's banquet hall. The restaurant and banquet hall was located in the heart of the west side Jewish community. They served all the Jewish specialties in the 1960's. Arthur Zweig, Marshall's father, opened Zweig's in Skokie at Church and Crawford. Marshall and his brother Herby opened Zweig's Restaurant in the late 60's in Niles across from the Mill Run theater. Many famous Las Vegas stars who performed at the Mill Run theater would come in to eat at Zweig's after the show. Zsa Zsa Gabor, Charro, Harry Belafonte, Jack Benny, Liberace, Steve and Eydie Gorme, Burt Reynolds, Sergio Franchi, Michael Jackson, Shecky Greene, Red Buttons and countless others ate at Zweig's. You never knew what celebrity came in to eat each week. Everyone knew Marshall. He was like a celebrity himself, always telling a joke. Marshall would be at the hostess station always greeting his customers with a warm smile. Zweig's served the best corned beef and pastrami sandwiches and homemade soups. All the recipes were passed down from his grandmother Bella. They were known for serving a big bowl of complimentary pickles and bread to every customer. After Zweig's closed in 1983, Marshall moved to Arizona and opened Zweig's in Scottsdale. In 1996, Marshall moved back to Illinois and opened Zweig's in Buffalo Grove on old McHenry Road. Customers still talk about missing Zweig's deli. Marshall served in the army during the Korean war, he was stationed in Baumholder, Germany. He met his wife Marilyn, as a customer at Zweig's and proposed to her later on in the Zweig's restaurant kitchen. They were married for 67 years. His passion was card playing and golf. He played many years the card game of Pan. Marshall is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Michael and Vicki and daughter Maureen Hope and three grandchildren, Alexander, Dr. Matthew Zweig and Karly and Sari Zweig and one great-grandchild, Jett Zweig.
