OBITUARY

With deep sadness for her loss but profound gratitude for her life, we share the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and beloved friend, Roberta “Mickey” Tandet Capsuto, age 92 and 7 months, of Arlington Heights, IL.

Together with her first husband, Arnold Tandet, she raised four children, while touching the lives of countless more children as a para-professional in the library at Glencoe School District. Later, she found love again with Jack Capsuto, with whom she shared a curiosity about the world and a passion for travel and books.

Mickey was a dedicated member of Congregation Beth Am in Buffalo Grove, IL, where she regularly attended services and sang in the Choir (finally retiring in October 2024) and was a devoted fixture in the synagogue community.

Our Mickey was a force of nature. Fiercely independent, she lived on her own until her passing. She was committed to her part-time job at Congregation Beth Am, only retiring after celebrating her 92nd birthday. She was a voracious reader and eager to share her perspective on novels with her multigenerational book clubs. She was an avid traveler and went on dozens of trips all over the world, as far as China and Australia.

A lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, she was elated when they finally won a World Series in 2016 – and relieved that it occurred during her lifetime.

Most of all, Mickey had a deep love for her family and friends. She would often be found spending time with one of her children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren, playing mahjong with her “mahj girls”, sharing a conversation and evening out with friends, or attending services at Congregation Beth Am.

Mickey lived a vibrant life full of joy, companionship, and curiosity, and her keen intelligence, fierce independence and sharp wit remained with her throughout her entire life.

Mickey was preceded in death by her parents, William Lerner and Lillian Lerner; her former husband Arnold Tandet; and her husband Jack Capsuto. She is survived by her sister Sandy and Ron Berliant (late), her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Marietta Greenberg , her sister-in- law Myra Greenberg; her children Joan and Cody Nelson, Linda Tandet, Bruce and Susan Tandet, and Steven Tandet and Jocelyn McClelland; her grandchildren Timothy and Ernesto Gonzales, Josh and Katie Pulling, Rachel and Matt Bielski, Sarah Tandet, Stacey and Dan Wadas, Ross Tandet, Gabrielle Tandet, Sloan Tandet and Brian Givens; her great-grandchildren Miranda, James, and Madelyn; and her many dear friends. We will all cherish her memory.

A service celebrating Mickey’s life will be held at Chicago Jewish Funerals,195 North Buffalo Grove Road, Buffalo Grove, IL 60089, on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at 12:00 pm, with burial to immediately follow at Shalom Memorial Park in Arlington Heights, IL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you send a contribution to The Mickey Capsuto Adult Learning Fund, at Congregation Beth Am, 1370 Abbott Court, Buffalo Grove, IL 60089, www.bethambg.org. Mickey came into my life 73 years ago, when I was nine. I understood that she would be my sister-in-law, but didn’t know that over time she would become my sister. I, like so many others, am grateful that she was a part of my life, and Marietta’s, and our family’s. Now all who were close to her know that she is very busy re-organizing the afterlife. God bless you, Mick.

My deepest & dearest condolences to the family of this remarkable woman.I am sorry I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing her for many years… yet I felt as though I knew her longer. She was extremely sincere, accepting, & as passionate as anyone I’ve ever met.I feel as though she was the matriarch or the glue that kept her family in peace. Her legacy should prevail…. I’ve said this a few times…. They just don’t make em like this anymore…. Rest In Peace.

I first met Mickey when I joined the Beth Am Choir, in 2001. Mickey was an amazing individual. I used to joke that I wanted to be like her at whatever age she was because I couldn't believe her incredible energy and lust for life. I sang with her in the the Choir for 15 years and remember her being in charge of the choir robes and other administrative duties. But that's not all! Mickey took care of everything, from the biggest of requests to the tinest of details in the Choir and at Beth Am. If I called for a condolence or a mitzvah to be placed in the Beth Am Bulletin, I knew it was going to be done! I clearly remember her being so excited when the Cubs went to the World Series, and constantly saying throughout my choir yeras when they weren't doing so well, "What are we going to do about our boys?". She was a kind, loving, caring, compassionate individual that lived the kind of life: for which everyone should aspire. Her pressence was huge and she will be greatly and forever missed. She touched everyone tha tknew her, but especially mie, as she helped me through some of my saddest times. It truly is a huge los for all who knew her. I'll miss her for sure. I'm sending, deepest sympathies to all of her great-grandchildren, grandchildren, and children for which she was so proud!!
May her memroy, her calming voice, her view of the World, and the way she chose to live her life, always be a blessing to all of you.
B'shalom,

So sorry to learn of my dear Mickey's passing. She was on of the first to welcome me to the Beth Am family six years ago and I will never forget her many kindnesses. I appreciated her leading the book club and enjoyed our many discussions. Above all, Mickey was my role model for leading a rich and meaningful Jewish life with her dedication to family and community. I am grateful that she was able to complete her synagogue tasks and be with us for her last High Holidays. Her life and her memory are trully a blessing!

Mickey and I met some 80 years ago working together at the Garrick Furniture Company where we both had office jobs--met her before I got married and people thought we were a couple. We have stayed friends for decades and when we lived in Illinois, we regularly got together but less so after my wife and I moved to the East Coast. However, we did visit each other often and saw each other not all that long ago. Will miss her.

Dear Linda,
Although I did not know your mother, she sounded like a remarkable person, full of life and joy.
She was incredibly brave choosing to finish her life on her own terms and you accepted her decision which was not easy.
I hope that your memories will sustain you during this difficult time

Mickey's late father, William Lerner, and my late mother, Ester Lerner, were first cousins. They were the children of two brothers...and so we shared a great-grandfather. I was so pleased when I heard from Jordan Berliant, who contacted me on ANCESTRY. They are part of my family I had never met or known. They came to the US and settled in different States. Ester Lerner's father settled in NYC. William Lerner's father settled in Illinois. The family was widely separated. And then in 2022, I believe, Sandy and Mickey came to NY and we met. I could see the family resemblances in Mickey right away. We kept in touch after they returned home. I am forever grateful to have met them and to have shared some photos and stories. Mickey was such a lovely lady, well informed, and very traveled. Our connection was of short duration, but very meaningful to me. It was as if I could now fill in some of the gaps in my family history....of the Lerner Family. My condolences to Sandy, all my cousins and to all who knew and loved her. She was a treasure!
