OBITUARY

Larry Leavitt, age 84

More than loving husband of Helene nee Kahaley. Dear and devoted father of Mark Leavitt. Proud son of the late Ben and Sylvia Leavitt. Brother of the late Alan (Naomi) Leavitt and Gregory (Fran) Leavitt. Caring uncle of Rebecca and Stephanie.

Larry was deeply dedicated to his wife, Helene, and his son, Mark. A lover of books, reading, and geography, he was a lifelong self-learner with a sharp mind, good humor, and a deep appreciation for the people and experiences around him. He had a remarkable ability to connect with others, often sharing in their interests, and even became close with Mark’s friends, cheering on sporting events like boxing and supporting them when needed.

Larry was a principled man who found joy and meaning in his work as a lawyer, embodying the belief that true pleasure comes through effort. At the same time, he delighted in life’s smaller moments—exercise, family meals, weekends at home, and his beloved lox and bagels. He was a mensch in every sense: kind, caring, compassionate, and honorable. Grateful for every kindness, big or small, Larry cherished the people in his life and was deeply cherished in return.

He will be profoundly missed by Helene and Mark, and all who knew and loved him.

Private services were held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Ark, 6450 North California Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60645 www.arkchicago.org. Arrangements by Chicago Jewish Funerals - Buffalo Grove Chapel, 847.229.8822, www.cjfinfo.com

Sending my deepest condolences and sympathy to Helene and Mark. I had the opportunity to spend time with my cousin Larry over the past couple of years, and appreciate that we had the chance to get to know each other better. He was always kind and very nice to be with. I will cherish the memories we made getting together. May his memory be a blessing.

An old friend who I could share my thoughts with and listen to his concerns about all our problems .Having a cool summer drink and a cigar in front of his house in summer and having endless conversations about anything , you name it with Larry always being right . I’ll never have those moments with Larry again and they can never be replaced and part of my joy is gone with Larry. Larry is at this moment correcting the angels about something and is right of course Larry you left to soon miss you terribly. Danny

Dear Mrs. Leavitt and Mark - I’m saddened to hear about Mr. Leavitt’s passing. He lived a long, prosperous life filled with positive impacts on those around him. He leaves us with wonderful memories that I will always cherish—like deep conversations, listening to classical records, laughing, learning, having fun, and so many more. He always treated me with kindness and made me feel comfortable. I will miss him, but I will also remember him and the wonderful person he was. I’m keeping him—and both of you—in my thoughts and prayers, and I hope comfort finds you wherever you are. - Love Mike

Larry and I met as esophageal cancer survivors. Our monthly calls together allowed us to compare notes but more so to encourage and inspire each other. I looked forward to our conversations. He was always working to improve himself. Well read, an intellectual, a big heart, good sense of humor and a solid friend. His love for his family and especially Helene were foremost. At the end of every call he always exhorted me with “never give up” and know he fought right up to the end. I miss him.
