OBITUARY

Leslie Robert Axelrod, 92

Beloved husband of Leah nee Mandelker for almost 70 years. Loving father of David (Penny), Harry (Hollis), Garrick, Bradley (Robin), Nell, and the late Craig (Carolina Gonzalez). Cherished grandfather of Melanie, Peri (Scott) Babendir, Robert, and Ari. Fond uncle and cousin, and a friend to many. Born in St Louis, Missouri to Molly and Ben Axelrod. Les received a Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering from Washington University and a second Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Missouri. He also earned Masters degrees in Electrical Engineering and Engineering Management from Northwestern University. After college, he joined the Navy and served on the USS Lewis during the Korean War. Throughout his engineering career, Les worked for companies across multiple industries. In addition to his day job and well into his retirement, he taught electrical engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology. An Eagle Scout himself, as an adult Les organized a cub scout troop which served hundreds of boys, even long after his personal involvement. He was an active member of B’nai Torah synagogue for more than 50 years, managed their library, and served on their financial board. He was also a member of the executive Board for the Highland Park Public Library, and served as its Treasurer. Although his family was spread across the world, they would gather for special occasions and Les loved to elaborately retell the story of The Pirate and the stories of Cadwalliter Entwhistle. To keep everyone safe and healthy, the interment service will be private. To attend the funeral live stream, please visit our website. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Alzheimer’s Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Floor 17,Chicago, Illinois 60601, www.alz.org would be appreciated. Words can not adequately express how important Les has been to me over the past almost forty years. I always referred to him lovingly as my" American Dad". He was always there to give me advice or just listen. He has seen me through so many milestones. I can not imagine my life without him in it.
I am so grateful to have known him. My life has been truly blessed.
Always with love.

Leah and Family,
Your husband, father, and grandfather was a person that my family and I were grateful to have met through our associations with B'Nai Torah and Har Shalom. We had more than a few Oneg Shabbats together and the twinkle in his eye will be missed. I wish that I had known of Les' penchant for red socks, because I would have certainly asked about them. Although I still don't understand the Fibonacci numbers, the red socks would not have been a problem. We are so sorry for your collective loss and are happy that your lives were blessed by Les for so many years.
Love,
Jeff, Mihaela, and Sarah Miller

Was his neighbor many years ago and worked closely with him on the important Elm Place School renovation at that time and kept in touch for a while after that. I even met and exchanged with him a bit over a year ago. As sharp and nice as ever. He will be missed.

What a wonderful life Les had. While I grieve with you for your loss I am so glad that you did have so very many wonderful years with him in it! He will live on forever in all of our memories and the times we think of him, quote him, and miss him.

To Leah and all your family: We have been truly blessed to know and love Les. Mati and I are so glad through modern technology to have been able to attend his funeral and Shiva. And I hope before long we can see you in person. So many memories. The address of one of our neighbors was 1729 and when Les found out he regaled us with a lengthy treatise on the significance of those two prime numbers -- and repeated the story many times. (I have no idea what it was about.) I shared books with him and a computer program that ran silently until, after several years, it revealed to him (as I recall) the largest prime number. I once enlisted his help proofreading a historical journal that I edited. But mostly I remember the warmth and humor and twinkle in his eyes whenever we were together. Our love and sympathy to you all.

I was so sorry to hear about Les, please accept my condolences. I moved to San Francisco over 30 years ago and most of my visits have been very brief but I remember Les and the rest of you fondly as well as your gracious hospitality. To all, please be well. Love Al Russcol
