OBITUARY

Jerry Lebovitz, age 85
Beloved husband of Bonnie Lebovitz, nee Massarsky. Loving father of Jill (Steven) Hoffman, Daniel (Alana) Lebovitz and Paul Lebovitz. Dear grandfather and papa of Ari, Zoe, Nina, David (fiancé Lauren), Rebecca, and Laney. Cherished brother of Lenore (the late Edward) Kaplan and the late Pauline (the late Sonny) Herskovitz and brother-in-law of Pamelyn (the late David Peterson) Massarsky and the late Michael Massarsky. Adored Uncle Jerry to many nieces and nephews.

Jerry Lebovitz passed away peacefully on June 27, 2025, at 85 years old. Jerry – born August 14, 1939 – worked a vibrant and varying career in Chicago. He owned an ice cream truck, a hot dog stand, clothing stores, and for the better part of his career, Chicago Pawners which his two sons and grandson still run. He was a staple in his community, and his passion and dedication to his work and customers will not be forgotten.

Jerry’s greatest joy was his family. Jerry and his wife of 61 years – Bonnie – raised three children and six grandchildren. Jerry loved his work at the pawn shop, his family, hot dogs, the grandkids and neighbors playing in his pool, Blue Bloods, card games with his friends, and animal shows. He was known for his dry sense of humor and charming smile, which was always contagious.

The family would like to thank his wonderful caregivers – Monica, Anna, and Natasha – for keeping him comfortable and happy in his home.

Service Sunday, 12 Noon at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd (at Niles Center Road), Skokie. Interment Shalom. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Magen David Adom, 20 W. 36th Street, Suite 1100, New York, NY 10018-9784, afmda.org. I knew Jerry while being a salesman calling on Chicago Pawners. Jerry was always friendly, outgoing and respectful. He always made time to chat, a real mensch. Daniel and Paul take after him. He will be missed.

I have so much love and respect for Jerry and the Lebovitz family that it is hard to narrow it down to a few words. But with that I wonder how so many years past with just wonderful memories of our families. I think of you and Bonnie often and still wish I were in Chicago and perhaps our children would carry on some of our traditions. But life seems to get in the way. I love you both and I like to believe you are with your mom and dad sitting with Pirri and Bundy enjoying each other and taking about how proud they are of their son, Jerry. I know you will rest in peace.
