OBITUARY

Michael Alan Reid, age 72.
Loving husband of Diana Reid nee Rifkin. Beloved father of Joshua Aaron (Debra Stone) Reid Stone, Bradley David (Jenny) Reid and Rebecca Ann (Clinton) Hieber. Cherished grandfather of Carson, Tyler, Sean and Zachary. Dear brother of Robert (Jill) Reid.

A profoundly dedicated Cubs fan since the 1950s, and a steadfast Beatles connoisseur, he thrived on consuming everything those mediums had to offer and did so with pride. Mike was also a valued member in the community of Skokie, IL. where he lived and raised his children for almost 40 years. A civic-minded individual, Mike served on the Skokie Park District executive board for nearly 20 years. As a commissioner and president, he was integral in spearheading the improvements of numerous parks and facilities. For several years he was the master of ceremonies for a multitude of Skokie Park District events, including their 4th of July celebrations and at the Skokie Festival of Cultures, using his charm and quick wit to entertain all those who attended. Mike also won the 2024 Commissioner of the Year Award, by the Illinois Association of Park Districts, the first time that the Skokie Park District has been a recipient of this honor. In September of 2024, Lawler Park, across the street from Niles North High School and Old Orchard Mall, was renamed Mike Reid Park, a tribute that the park district graciously bestowed upon him to memorialize his memory. Mike will be missed dearly by the innumerable amount of people who valued his presence in their lives. His loss will be mourned for years to come.

I met Mike when he began his run for Park Commissioner in 2004. I was charged with giving tours of all parks and facilities to those running for that election. On that very first day, I knew I met a friend. Not only did we share our passion for the Cubs and Blackhawks (we went to many, many games together) but he was clearly excited and very curious about the prospect of serving the citizens of Skokie. I remember him taking such a detailed interest in the parks, programs, staff, and facilities, that the tour had to be extended by another full day. After that it seemed like daily phone calls to ask even more questions about everything from policy and finances, to playgrounds and even how the Zamboni worked. I was delighted that he won his seat that year and I knew we had a very philanthropic and altruistic Board member arriving. His only interests were the betterment of the park district and the betterment of the services we could provide the Skokie community. He accomplished that mission.
Mike was dedicated to using his leadership to encourage and motivate staff to be their very best. He was at every park district event, from large community wide extravaganzas to the graduation ceremonies of children at the Tot Learning Center , and everything in between. Mike was a unique man, he was truly a kind and generous soul who left a positive heartfelt impression to everyone who was fortunate enough know him. He will be missed.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have met "Cubbie Mike" and his fine family since the early 2000s. Everyone who knew, respected and appreciated Mike has lost a trusted friend and confidant. His love for his family, the Skokie Park District, Chicago Cubs, Bears and Black Hawks was both special and authentic. The numerous people who valued his presence in their lives will miss Mike dearly. Somehow, I believe he will remain to cheer us on. May his good name and concern for others be for a blessing!
