OBITUARY

Florence “Flo” Bubes, a beloved matriarch, businesswoman, and icon of strength and elegance, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, at the age of 104. Born in 1921 in Russia, Flo immigrated with her family to Cuba and then to Chicago. She met her husband, Irving Bubes, in high school, and they went on to share 77 loving years together. Both studied at the University of Chicago and were involved in the Manhattan Project during World War II. They had 3 beautiful children which she raised while working part-time, and later as they grew older, Flo founded and grew a successful real estate business on Chicago’s North Shore. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Flo was known for her impeccable taste, sharp intellect, sassy nature and deep care for those around her. She lived independently until her last days, even driving until 103! She spent her life forming meaningful connections and dear friendships with everyone around her. Beloved wife of the late Irving Bubes. Loving mother of Sharon (the late Stuart) Levy, Jacqueline (Dr. John) Holicka, and David (Carol) Bubes. Proud grandmother of Asher Levy, Raymond Levy, Lisa Bubes, and Steven (Annalise) Bubes. Cherished great-grandmother of Juliana Levy, Max Bubes, and Tommy Bubes. Dear sister of the late Sylvia (the late Harry) Kelson. Flo will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a true original — wise, playfully bold, and full of life.

My dear Jackie and Brills,

Larry, Amanda and I are so sorry for your loss. What a legacy and some big shoes to fill from tiny high heeled feet. Your mom was a very special lady and an inspiration to so many.

Dear Jackie and Brills,
I’m sorry to hear that your mother passed. Remember when our mothers met each other in front of a wholesale purse store and they started going out as couples My favorite memories of your Mom were in San Diego where we spent so many years in the sun with them.
She was a great lady, and a wild driver. She was fun, fun, fun and will be sorely missed.
Love, Susan Stockdale

Florence was my neighbor for 20 years, and I had the privilege of interviewing her for our Meet the Neighbors section of the Valley Lo condo newsletter. I heard the remarkable story of her life, coming from Cuba and settling here, and always enjoyed talking to her and listening to her very decided opinions! She was a role model of caring and no-nonsense actions, and was fantastically sharp even in her 100s! Many of us will miss Florence. May her memory be for a blessing.---Shelley Riskin

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your mother. I had the great pleasure to meet her at the Village Treasure House, where she delighted all of us whenever she came in. She always had interesting items to consign. She must have led a most interesting life.

Blessings to you and your family,
