OBITUARY

Herbert Joseph Dorfman (1941–2025)

Herbert Joseph Dorfman, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2025. He was 84.

Born in 1941, Herb lived a life marked by warmth, humor, quiet strength, and deep devotion to those he loved. In 1968, he married the love of his life, Barbara (née Graff) Dorfman. Together, they shared 56 wonderful years of marriage, building a home filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to family.

Herb was the proud father of two amazing children, Julie (Mark) Dillon and Michael (Beth) Dorfman. He adored his four remarkable grandchildren—Aidan, Evie, Teagan, and Nathan—who brought him endless joy and pride. He was a devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend to many.

He was also the cherished brother of the late Irving (the late Eileen) Dorfman, the late Phillip Dorfman, and the late Robert (the late Sharon) Dorfman, brother-in-law of Biv Michaels, widow of his brother Phillip and later of Edwin Michaels, and a loving uncle to many wonderful, spirited nieces and nephews.

Herb served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and carried his sense of duty and quiet generosity into every aspect of his life. He loved helping others, especially with home improvement projects—always ready with a tool in hand and a practical solution. He also found joy in classical music, spent many happy hours gardening, and relished grilling outside for family and friends on sunny afternoons.

Herb will be remembered for his dry wit, generous heart, steady presence, and the many friendships he nurtured throughout his life. He was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew him.

Service Wednesday, April 23, 12PM at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd. (at Niles Center Road), Skokie. Interment Westlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Herb’s memory to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, PO Box 22324, New York, NY 10087, www.lls.org/, whose work meant so much to him and his family. Barb, sorry for your loss. We just saw it on FB and were shocked. We unfortunately have not been in touch recently. Herb was a great guy and we enjoyed his and your company when we’ve been in town. It’s hard believe how the years have gone by with you guys and the fond memories we had. You have our condolences and we are thinking of you at this time.

He was always there to help and support. Spent many times enjoying dinner with Barbara and Herbie. Felt like he was a big brother to me. When Sol passed Barbara and Herb where there for me to help with anything I needed. Even my son was included in the closeness they gave they extended to me. I will always remember Herb and his kindness. May he rest in peace and always remember that he is missed.

Barb, we just don’t have the words to express our sorrow. We will never forget Herbie helping Dick run after our dog when he would run out of the house. Or the times we would forget our keys and Herbie would “break in” so we get into the house. Close to 50 years of sweet memories to remember our precious friend.
Even though we can’t be with all of you tomorrow, our heats will be with you. Sending you love and strength during this time.

I worked with Herb over ten years. He was an excellent, hard working sales representative who produced at a high level. More important he was a kind and loving person. Herb was blessed with a great wife and wonderful children. I’ll miss him. May his soul rest in peace.
