OBITUARY
Herbert Joseph Dorfman (1941–2025)
Herbert Joseph Dorfman, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2025. He was 84.
Born in 1941, Herb lived a life marked by warmth, humor, quiet strength, and deep devotion to those he loved. In 1968, he married the love of his life, Barbara (née Graff) Dorfman. Together, they shared 56 wonderful years of marriage, building a home filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to family.
Herb was the proud father of two amazing children, Julie (Mark) Dillon and Michael (Beth) Dorfman. He adored his four remarkable grandchildren—Aidan, Evie, Teagan, and Nathan—who brought him endless joy and pride. He was a devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend to many.
He was also the cherished brother of the late Irving (the late Eileen) Dorfman, the late Phillip Dorfman, and the late Robert (the late Sharon) Dorfman, brother-in-law of Biv Michaels, widow of his brother Phillip and later of Edwin Michaels, and a loving uncle to many wonderful, spirited nieces and nephews.
Herb served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and carried his sense of duty and quiet generosity into every aspect of his life. He loved helping others, especially with home improvement projects—always ready with a tool in hand and a practical solution. He also found joy in classical music, spent many happy hours gardening, and relished grilling outside for family and friends on sunny afternoons.
Herb will be remembered for his dry wit, generous heart, steady presence, and the many friendships he nurtured throughout his life. He was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Service Wednesday, April 23, 12PM at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd. (at Niles Center Road), Skokie. Interment Westlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Herb’s memory to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, PO Box 22324, New York, NY 10087, www.lls.org/, whose work meant so much to him and his family.
