OBITUARY

Marjorie Ellen Sandlow ("Marjie") passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on March 19, 2025, 11 days before her 71st birthday and just a few months before what would have been her 50th Anniversary with the love of her life, her husband, Barry Rosen. Marjie, who had been in excellent health, was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer only six weeks earlier.

Marjie was a bright and shining star and a valued friend to everyone who knew her. Her dazzling, warm and genuine smile graced her beautiful face all day every day of her life. She was "The Girl With A Million Smiles."

But Marjie was not only about smiles -- she was a woman of substance and accomplishment.

After graduating from the University of Illinois in only three years, Marjie became one of only a handful of women at the time to graduate from Harvard Business School. Marjie then went on to a successful business career in medical equipment manufacturing, health care consulting, and marketing consulting, where she opened and managed the first European office of her firm, in London.

After relocating back to Chicago, Marjie and Barry started a family, with Hillary, Peter and Brian arriving in rapid succession. As with everything that she did, Marjie excelled at being a mother, making sure her children had every opportunity.

Marjie quickly became a community leader, where she held many roles, including PTO President, before being elected by the community to three terms on the District 113 School Board, which serves both Highland Park and Deerfield High Schools. Recognizing her leadership, her fellow Board Members elected her to three terms as Vice President and two terms as President. Marjie also served for nine years as representative to the North Shore Special Education District, where she also was elected as Vice President and President. Marjie then became President of Cornerstone, Jamaica, which provides free eye glasses and other services to elementary school children.

A determined athlete, Marjie ran three half marathons, completed multiple triathlons, and scuba-dived, backpacked, ocean kayaked, and river rafted all over the world. She recently climbed Mt. Etna -- the largest volcano in Europe -- in the snow.

She loved and was loved dearly by many friends, with whom she walked thousands of miles, played hundreds of mahjong games, and spent infinite time telling stories about her family.

Throughout her life, Marjie was most proud of being a wife and mother. She was the glue of the whole extended family. She will forever be missed and in our hearts.

Devoted daughter of Betty Sandlow nee Blumenthal and the late Richard Sandlow. Treasured wife of Barry Rosen. Loving mother of Hillary (Jim) Kuperman, Peter (Kayla) Rosen and Brian (fiancée Sabrina Pearson) Rosen. Cherished Grandmother of Jude, Myles, and was excitedly expecting her third grandchild in September. Dear sister of Tom Sandlow and the late Maria (Jesus Castillo) Del Carmen Castillo. Fond sister-in-law of Randy (the late Martha) Rosen and Mark (Debra) Ambrose. Beloved Aunt of Bonnie (Tony), Sheri, Mariano (Flora), Juan (Suzy), Bea (Sam), Neal, Jeff, Elizabeth, Henry and Della. Adored Great Aunt and Cousin to many.

Service Sunday, 12 noon at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd., (at Niles Center Road) Skokie. Interment Westlawn Cemetery. To view the service online please visit our website. In lieu of flowers, memorials to North Shore Congregation Israel, 1185 N. Sheridan Rd., Glencoe, IL 60022 www.nsci.org would be appreciated. We are so very sorry to miss the funeral, as we are in Chile, but we will try to join you via the Livestream service. We are devastated, as we know everyone who knew and loved Marjie is as well. We, too, think of Marjie’s wide smile and happy, optimistic outlook on life. Always one to laugh at herself and fully get in on a joke, it was a joy to spend time together with abundant laughter and great conversation during those times. And yes, Marjie always had joy and a twinkle in her eyes when talking about her children, grandchildren, Barry and their many adventures. We will miss her deeply.

So sorry and saddened to hear of Marjie’s passing. Memories of many sleepovers and family time together come to mind.
Being 18 hours apart and our dads friends since grammar school, always left me feeling a special bond with her.

Barry and family, I am devastated by this news. We had a lot of great memories with our children. It didn't take long after we moved next door for us to become friends and for Hillary to create a path between our homes. All of that seems like yesterday. She was a wonderful person and friend and will surely be missed by many.

I remember Margie being 3 years older than I was and despite this whenever I visited my buddy Tom and she was home she would talk with me as if I were her friend and peer. I liked her a lot even though I always saw her as Tom's sister. Margie was very kind

Margie was on the School Board and worked hard to make improvements. She will be greatly missed. May her memory be for a blessing. My deepest condolences.

Barry: I am so sorry about this terrible loss. Even though I have not kept in touch all of these years, Marjie was always one of those special people who touched my life in such a positive way during our Niles West days. She was such a sweetheart (such a radiating smile) and you guys were a great couple. Regards from Amyra, too. I hope your beautiful memories will lessen this tremendous loss.

I have known Marjie for many years. She was an avid runner/walker and I was always happy to see her smiling face on the trail. I saw her in the lobby at HP hospital when we
were both waiting for lab work this past January. . She was pleasant and sharing info about her soon to be third grandchild and son's upcoming wedding. I will miss seeing her around town and want to send my deepest condolences to her family. May all of your beautiful memories help bring you peace during these trying times.

I am grateful for the opportunity to participate remotely in what was truly a beautiful celebration of Marjie’s life, and particularly grateful I logged on early to be able to view the amazing slideshow of photos that captured so well the joy and love that were a hallmark of how she lived. To Barry, Hillary, Peter, Brian (and the rest of the family): I can only hope you are feeling the depth and the warmth of the love that surrounds you at this difficult time, and always. 💕

Barry and Family,
The Rabbi was right; we shouldn't be here, doing this. You all have my condolences over the loss of a truly great person who I did not get a chance to know long enough but who, during that short time, proved to be a person we will all miss. May you all be comforted by your memories of the truly great time you had with Marjie.

I had the good fortune of traveling with Marjie (and Barry) the past few years. She was a pleasure to be around. So thoughtful of others, funny, and always willing to go with the flow when travel adventures threw a curve ball. It's difficult to think that she is now only in our hearts. I can only imagine just how hard this must be for her family to have lost the anchor, the foundation of the family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Living in Paris, I did not get to see Marjie outside of reunions. But I remember her very well from class at HBS and from getting to speak to her, for example at our 45th reunion where she explained her outstanding work with Cornerstone. Everyone from our section loved Marjie. I am so sorry for the family's loss. As Rabbi Geffen said, words don't take away the pain. But I am sending my best thoughts and prayers to Barry and the family. Please stay well and try to apply what Marjie wanted, which is for all to be happy!
