OBITUARY

Avis Hope Cohen, age 84

Avis Hope Cohen, born on November 29, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, to Harry and Ethel Schulner, died on June 6, 2026.

She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, a dear friend to many, a groundbreaking neuroscientist, mentor, and a feminist committed to the causes of peace, equality, and the advancement of science.

Avis earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan in 1964 and a Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1977. From 1977 to 1979, she was a postdoctoral scholar at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. She served as a research associate at Cornell University from 1980 to 1990, when she joined the University of Maryland faculty as a professor in the Department of Zoology (now Biology), and then as a professor in the Institute for Systems Research as well.

At the University of Maryland, Avis was the founding director of the University of Maryland's Program in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science from 1996 to 1998. She served as project director for the university's National Science Foundation ADVANCE Award. She participated in the Telluride Workshop on Neuromorphic Engineering for many years, beginning in 1994, and served on its advisory board. She was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2008 and was named a University of Maryland Distinguished Schol-Art-Teacher for 2011-2012. She retired as Professor Emerita in 2014.

Following a highly influential mathematical modeling study of lamprey locomotion, she embarked on many years of laboratory research at Cornell and the University of Maryland, focused on the neural control of locomotion in the lamprey, including the development of central pattern generators, regeneration after injury, and then application of central pattern generators to robotics. On her retirement, Avis was described as "one of the true pioneering women in academic STEM fields" by the A. James Clark School of Engineering.

She is survived by her husband, Marshall M. Cohen, whom she married in 1961; her children, Mellennesse Blackbird and wife Heather Blackbird, and Philip N. Cohen and wife, Judy Ruttenberg; her grandchildren, Morian Willow and his wife, Caltin Jones, Kae, Saul, and Mingo Blackbird, Ana Charlotte and Ruby Conen; and her great-grandson, Damian Willow. She was preceded in death by her brother, Larry Schulner, who is survived by his wife, Sharalynn Schulner.

Avis taught me much of the neuroscience I know, in her one-year graduate course many decades ago. And anything else that I came to know about the subject later on was a direct result of the huge stimulation and fascination that I derived from her wonderful lectures. I kept in touch with her over the years as we continued as UMD faculty members. I will miss her dearly.

As a Morgan State University colleague of Dr. Marshall Cohen, I was graced to meet his beloved wife, Avis! She was a precious, loving friend, who I will definitely miss.

My prayer is that God will strengthen the Cohen family during your loss and that His comfort will be felt by every heart.

Submitted with sincere condolences,
Your dear friend … Prof. Shirley Russell

Avis Cohen was the first neuroscientist I ever knew. It was 1997 or 1998 at the University of Maryland, College Park. I was a freshly arrived undergrad from France, searching for a PhD program in cognitive neuroscience, and I was advised to contact Avis, then the head of the new NACS program. One day, I knocked at the door of her laboratory – a brown door opening into a luminous white and turquoise lab area. First, it was her determined voice telling me to come in, then her wide smile that caught me, then her eyes shining with a deep intelligence of both heart and mind. The kind that inhabits eternally curious and amused scientists. She was inquisitive, insistent in her questioning. I was so intimidated I lost my words – our first meeting is a blur to me now.

I did join the PhD program as one of the first PhD students. Though I never worked with her directly, I took her classes, and we spoke many times about what it means to be a woman in science. She was a strong, generous, fierce, and demanding woman and neuroscientist. I loved her bright laughter.

Before I moved on after my graduation, I remember a lovely dinner with Avis and her husband, Marshall, where we simply talked about life. The last time I saw her was in 2017. We shared one more deep conversation, and she told me about her illness with a gentleness and clarity that were entirely her own. We took a couple of pictures and selfies together. She never managed to send them to me, but I hold that moment dear all the same.

Avis, you were a profound influence on so many of us. Your legacy lives in many questions we keep asking from neurons to life itself.
Rest gently.

I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathy to Dr Marshall Cohen and Family. It was indeed an honor, and a privilege for me to know and to be a part of Avis care team, Avis was one of the best person I have ever taken care of. I will always remember her smile and hoe. She took care of her teeth. I will remember the conversations we had how she spoke about her mother-in-law and her husband also her two boys Its was always a pleasure and joy for me to be in her presence. Thank you to the family for the opportunity. I pray that God will continue to strengthen you during this time as you mourn the loss of your wife and mother. God bless you thank you again for sharing your mom with me. I will forever remember her wisdom and just a kind, sweet, gentle soul that she was.

I am very sorry for the passing of Avis. I feel so fortunate to have known her for almost 10 years and to have had many opportunities to listen to her stories, share her memories, and experience her endless love for her family. She was always welcoming and charitable, and she made me feel like I was the only person in the room when we were together.

Sending you love and peace during this time.
