OBITUARY

Steve “Doc” Mendelson, age 64.

Beloved husband of 32 years to Pam nee Jensen. Dear father of Jenna Mendelson, Sarah (Davis) Hunt, and Lauren Mendelson. Devoted son of the late Warren and Fern Mendelson. Cherished brother of Alan Mendelson and Dan (Scott Cook) Mendelson. Proud uncle of Allie, Lindsey, Jessie, Elizabeth, Nathan, and Erik. Fond nephew of Joan Chukerman.

Steve was a passionate professor for over 30 years beginning at Robert Morris University in Chicago and later at Roosevelt University where he loved guiding and mentoring students. You would often find him at the university’s sporting events, supporting students and showing his RMU pride. An avid sports fan, Steve loved to cheer for Chicago Sports teams like the White Sox, Bears, Bulls, and Sky. A former Hoosier himself, he was still waiting for Indiana to return to the Bobby Knight glory days while he cheered for The Ohio State University and the Butler Bulldogs after minimal convincing from his daughters. When not watching sports or teaching, you could find Steve going on excursions with his family. Whether it was Broadway performances, movie theaters, or arcades, he loved spending time with his girls.

Steve placed a large emphasis on family, both blood and chosen. His aunts, uncles, and parents (Joan and Mitchell Chukerman, Beverly and Bob Silverman, Henry and Rhoda Frank, and Fern and Warren Mendelson) instilled in him the importance of family. Steve loved being the “fun uncle” joking around with nieces and nephews. Steve grew up in Highland Park, and is a lifelong resident of the North Shore. If he wasn’t at own home, you could find him at Shelly and Marilyn Simon’s playing baseball with David “Scooter” Simon. He graduated from Highland Park High School where he was lovingly referred to as “Doc” by his chosen family who knew even then that he would be a professor.

Service Sunday 2 PM at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 195 N. Buffalo Grove Road (One block north of Lake Cook Road) Buffalo Grove. Interment Private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to National Kidney Foundation of Illinois 215 West Illinois Street Suite 1C, Chicago, IL 60654 www.nkfi.org or to American Cancer Association P.O. Steve was such a great guy. He was the one who hired me to teach at RMU in 1993! He was a great mentor and friend. I was so grateful to have long chats with him last year at Roosevelt U. We reminisced about the good old days at RMU and shared some of our funniest stories from back then. He will be missed.
Peace and love to his dear family.

I worked with Steve at Robert Morris University and looked forward to seeing him. He was steady in his demeanor, attitude and humor. He always asked about others; what a great listener.
He spoke about his wife and daughters with pride and grace. My heart goes out to you all.

I worked with Steve at RMU for nearly 20 years, and made the switch with him and Dr. Atre in 2004 to the Lake County Campus. The three of us shared the same office space and had many interesting conversations over the years. I do remember how very proud he was of his daughters. I'm glad I got to know him--he was a great guy all around. So very sorry for your loss.
