OBITUARY

Rolly Susan (nee Stein) Cohen; 70; longtime resident of Highland Park, IL, after a valiant battle with breast cancer since 2014; born at Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago, IL, June 10, 1953, died at home in Highland Park, IL, with her family at her bedside, on Saturday evening, March 9, 2024; beloved wife of Stuart Lee Cohen (since June 25, 1977 at the Ritz Carlton, Chicago, IL, by the late Rabbi Herbert Bronstein); loving mother of Harris Matthew Cohen of Silver Spring, MD, and Abra Beth Cohen of Chicago, IL; fond sister of Dr. Stuart Alan, MD (Katherine Jan, nee Lecklider) Stein, of Santa Ana, CA, and sister-in-law of Marlene Ann Cohen (Arnold Bernard Kaber, Ph.D.) of Boynton Beach, FL; very devoted daughter of the late Jerome Hebert, Esq., and Iris Betty (nee Lanski) Stein; caring daughter-in-law of the late Arnold Aaron and Evelyn Ruth (nee Cohen) Cohen; cherished granddaughter of the late Abe Leo and Bessie (nee Rissman) Stein and Harry and Anna Mae (nee Goldberg) Lanski. Rolly first lived in Hyde Park where her mother’s family, the Lanski’s, were longtime stalwart members of Congregation Rodfei Zedek, before her family moved to Highland Park in 1958. She was a proud graduate of Ravinia School, Edgewood Junior High School, and Highland Park High School (Class of 1971). In the summers, Rolly worked as a counselor at Sunset Woods and Kelly’s Day Camps. Rolly received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with High Honors and a Minor in Music from the University of IL at Urbana-Champaign in 1975 and her Master of Arts in Jewish Professional Studies from the Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership in 2010. Rolly served as the Director of both Teacher Education and the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning at the Board of Jewish Education of Metropolitan Chicago, where she was also the 2011 Rambam Award recipient and instrumental in founding the Makor Or Center for children and young adults with special needs, until her retirement in 2020; and she also taught religious school at North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe, IL, for over 20 years. Rolly was confirmed at Congregation B’nai Torah in Highland Park, IL, and learned to chant Torah as an adult at North Suburban Synagogue Beth El in Highland Park, IL, where Rolly’s parents and her own family have been longtime members. She was dedicated to Jewish education; a classical pianist; especially kind, diplomatic, and considerate in how she interacted with everyone; always knew the right thing to say or do, including correspondence etiquette; and, just like her mother and maternal grandmother before her, always fashionably and elegantly dressed. She loved dogs, ladybugs, and the ravines of Highland Park and their Spring trilliums, but most importantly her family. Rolly’s Hebrew name was Rachel Tzippora in memory of her mother’s maternal grandfather Raphael Golde and her father’s maternal grandmother Ida (nee Schwerson) Rissman. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Susan G. Komen for the Cure (www.komen.org) or the Jewish United Fund/Israel Emergency Fund (www.juf.org/IsraelEmergencyFund) would be appreciated. Service Tuesday, March, 12, 2024 at 12 Noon at NSS Beth El, 1175 Sheridan Road, Highland Park, IL. Interment at Rosehill Cemetery, 5800 N. Ravenswood Avenue, Chicago, IL. Arrangements by Chicago Jewish Funerals, 847-229-8822. To attend the funeral live stream, please visit the website, www.cjfinfo.com.

May her neshama have an Aliyah. She no doubt was a special woman of great character to have raised her daughter with so much love that Abra moved back to Chicago and worked remote, to devote these last two years of Abra’s life to help care for her mother. My condolences to Abra and family.

I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Rolly. Please accept my heartfelt condolences to you, Stuart, Harris, and Abra during this difficult time. Losing someone so dear is never easy, and I want you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Reflecting on our shared memories, especially those from our time in 8th grade at Edgewood, brings a flood of nostalgia and warmth to my heart. Rolly’s house was where friendships flourished and memories were etched into our souls.

I took great comfort in the fact that Rolly was my second cousin (once removed). That was a delightful surprise, adding another layer of connection to our friendship.

May you find solace in the loving memories you shared with Rolly, wife, mother, and may her spirit continue to live on in your hearts.

With deepest sympathy,

Michael Wolf

I have known Stuart my whole life. As I left the Chicago area after high school, I only met Rolly very briefly on a couple of occasions, but I know through my ongoing contact with Stuart what a beautiful marriage they had, what a boon she was to him, and about their wonderful children. Rolly and Stuart were both heroes through her long, long illness, and I gather the same is true for the children. I send my deepest condolences to the family.

Rolly and I were classmates throughout Junior High and High School. She was always kind to everyone, a truly gracious person, even at a young age. It was so good to reconnect with her at our 50th High School Reunion, and later I had the opportunity to visit her in her home, when I helped Stuart with a reunion project of his own. My deep condolences go out to Stuart, Harris and Abra - I will always remember her beautiful smile. Her memory is and will be a blessing to all who knew and loved her.

Stuart, I’d been thinking of you since October 7th, a horrid day in history. Today, seeing the notice of Rolly’s passing, it hit hard as an unbelievable sequence of events.
My heart breaks for you & your family with this profound loss. I only met Rolly a few times, but she was always cordial & smiling. You will be in my prayers. May God comfort you now & always. No separation can ever break the bonds of love.

Dearest Stuart & family~
Devastated ~ the world just became less bright. Rolly was my friend. My mentor. My colleague. She was among those who encouraged me to go into Jewish Education. We traveled to Israel together thru melton. We dressed up our dogs for a Ravinia Halloween stroll. And we are neighbors. Stuart~ so many more NSCI memories. Dear Cohen Family and Extended Loved Ones,
We are so sorry to learn about the passing of this wonderful soul, your mother/wife/family member/friend/former coworker. Rolly was the head of the education and teacher v as center at the Board of Jewish Ed when I was on their board. Never was there such a friendly, compassionate person as Rolly was. No matter what the question was, Rolly was there, with a kind and informative reply; and she seemed compassionate to everyone with whom she was in touch.
May Rolly rest in peace and may your memories give some small measure of closure, in time! – – Dottie Fiedler/Al Speisman
