OBITUARY

Ruth Colby nee Cohen, 69.

Beloved wife of Donald M. DeFrank. Loving mother of David (Becky Riffkin) Chodak. Dear sister of Judy (Steven) Dolins, sister-in-law of Sue DeFrank and Joan Beeler. Loving aunt of Maddie Dolins and 1St Lieutenant US NAVY Dr. Michael (Meredith) Beeler and Gabi Kastel.

Under Ruth’s leadership, Silver Cross opened Will County’s first and only Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in 2022 – the 24-bed Amy, Matthew & Jay Vana Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; introduced an open-heart surgery program in 2019, that is now one of the busiest in the State of Illinois; and championed the Midwest Institute for Robotic Surgery at Silver Cross in 2012, which is among the top three robotic surgery programs in the Midwest.

Ruth also forged partnerships with several leading Chicago health systems, bringing world-class care to the southwest suburbs so residents could receive the most advanced care close to home. These include the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab for inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services; University of Chicago Medicine for cancer services and neurosciences; Rush University Medical Center for lung surgery; and Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital for pediatric and neonatal services. In addition, she partnered with US HealthVest to build the 110-bed Silver Oaks Behavioral Hospital on the Silver Cross Campus, which opened in early 2019.

Ruth assumed the duties of President and Chief Executive Officer on Oct. 1, 2017, after serving as Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer for twelve years.?Throughout her tenure, Ruth worked closely with the hospital Board of Directors to set the organization’s vision and strategic direction.?Her exceptional business acumen and visionary leadership led to transformational growth for Silver Cross Hospital over the years – expanding from a 289-bed hospital when the hospital opened its New Lenox campus in 2012 to 348 beds today.

During that time, the hospital’s medical staff also increased dramatically – from 350 medical staff members to more than 1,200 – attracted by the hospital’s commitment to providing exceptional care while investing in the latest medical technologies. She also expanded the hospital’s footprint through successful ventures in surgery, imaging services and medical group expansions. Silver Cross now has more than a dozen locations throughout its service area in Will County.

Ruth was also very active outside of the hospital – both in community organizations and healthcare associations. She served as Chair-Elect of the Illinois Health and Hospital Association (IHA) and was slated to become Chair in 2024. Ruth also had recently been appointed to the American Hospital Association’s Regional Planning Board for Region 5.

Ruth also served as a Past President of the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development, an American Hospital Association group and received the national award for Individual Personal Achievement in 2009. A passionate advocate for the community, Ruth also gave generously of her time and talents to numerous community boards. She was Chair of the Will County Center for Economic Development, on the board of the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center, a member of the United Way of Will County Pillars Society, the Joliet Rotary Club and the Economic Club of Chicago.??

What’s more, Ruth’s passion for achieving health equity and helping the less advantaged in the hospital’s service area, particularly on the east side of Joliet, led to the creation of the Silver Cross Healthy Community Commission (HCC) in 2008. Under Ruth’s guidance, this community-based organization has been focused on creating a stronger, healthier future by providing support for education, workforce development training, and enrichment activities for youth, to improve the quality of life for the communities we serve. Since its founding, the HCC has awarded over $3 million in educational scholarships, workforce development, and grants to numerous east-side Joliet residents and organizations.

In 2021, Ruth received the Athena Award from the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry and was named by?Crain’s?Chicago Business?a Notable Woman in Healthcare and Notable Woman Executive over age 50 in 2019. In 2023, she was named New Lenox Citizen of the Year by the New Lenox Chamber of Commerce and a Notable Healthcare Executive by?Crain's Chicago Business.?And this week, Ruth was to receive the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Rainbow Council of the Boy Scouts.

Ruth was a remarkable, kind soul. She was small but mighty as she lead our silver cross family with humble grace. Ruth was and will forever be the expectation and standard of the silver cross culture. It was a true honor to be apart of Ruth’s vision and the unrivaled care we will continue to provide in her honor and memory.

To Donald, David, and Ruth’s friends and family, there are no words that will comfort you in this time of immense loss. My heart breaks for you and I send my heartfelt condolences and prayers to you all as you try to navigate this unimaginable, great loss.

Ruth was kind, smart, had a vision of what Silver Cross should be and was able to both share and promote that vision… so many health care executives have “ideas” but few can turn ideas into reality… Silver will forever be a better place because of Ruth !

The incredible list of awards, accomplishments, and accolades is unbelievable and still such a small part of who Ruth is to all of us. For me, she has been mentor and friend, trusted counselor and wise critic. She supported the 1000s of people who worked under her leadership unfailingly, dragging us all through each change and shift. She was strong and tough while being simultaneously kind, patient, and understanding. Her vision for our hospital and community was unmatched. Ruth was a small part of my day to day life, but there is a large hole that is left by her absence. The physicians of our hospital will miss her. The community will miss her. I already miss her very much. Condolences from my family and I in your time of grieving and sadness.

Ruth was an amazing leader. A visionary. Through her leadership she mentored and guided her Silver Cross Family to build the unrivaled medical center we are today. She was a thoughtful and radiant person who greeted her Silver Cross family members in the hall. Ruth challenged us all and helped us stay the course, maintain our culture, and advance our organization. Ruth's legacy is umatched and her Silver Cross family will carry it forward in her honor. It was a true blessing to have known Ruth, worked with her, and learned from her. I am a better leader because of Ruth Colby. Our Silver Cross Family, community, and all that knew her will miss her!

My heartfelt condolences to Ruth's family.

I have been at Silver Cross for only 4 years now, so I didn't know Ruth as long as most employees here but every time I saw her, she had a big smile on her face. I had the pleasure of meeting her several times and greeting her in passing in the halls. When I started at Silver a patient wrote a letter to Ruth saying how happy she was with the service I provided, I made an impact on that patient, and she addressed the letter directly to Ruth. Ruth wrote me a handwritten thank you note on her stationary, a white card with an R embossed on it. I remember saying to my family how special that was to receive and I thought wow she takes the time to see the little things too and took time out of her busy day to write that to me. She left a great impression on me, and Ruth will certainly be missed by all.
My sincere condolences go out to her entire family and circle of friends.

I met Ruth is 2007 when I was first invited to do leadership development work at Silver Cross. I immediately was drawn to her keen intellect, intense energy and fierceness of purpose. Her passion for Silver Cross and the people who worked there was infectious. She believed in her people and invested in them. She allowed me to continue to contribute to leadership development up until the present day. I have served many health care organizations across the US and Ruth stands out as the CEO who stayed connected to her people, developed her people and embodied the leadership she expected from others. My deep condolences to Ruth's family and to her Silver Cross family.

Ruth came by the main lobby 1 week before the new visitor process was started. With her great smile Ruth asked me what I thought of the new process. I told her it will be excellent. for the hospital. Ruth smiled and in her soft voice. She said Silver Cross future was bright. My prayers are with her family and the Silver Cross family.

If were not for Ruth our organization would not exist. She was the driving force behind Premier Suburban Medical Group and attended every meeting opening it with her positive words and vision. She is such an incredible role model for women. Despite the pressure of her job she always had a smile on her face. She will be missed by so many.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ruth Colby while working in the lab on a holiday. I recognized her immediately from the newsletters. I was pleasantly surprised to see the CEO at the hospital on a holiday! She acknowledged each and every one of us. She thanked us for working the holiday and gave everyone a coupon for Cafe' 1800.
Mrs. Colby's smile and presence will truly be missed. My deepest condolences to her family.
