OBITUARY

Beverly B. Smulevitz, nee Adler, age 73

Beloved wife of Leslie Smulevitz. Loving mother of Shanti (Tony) Duncan and Cara (Christopher Tucker) Smulevitz. Proud grandmother of Eric John Duncan, Jr., Tanyon Duncan and Lena Duncan. Dear sister of Michael Adler (of blessed memory). Fond aunt of Tina Adler, Richard Adler, Avner Gilead, Danny Smulevitz, Amanda Smulevitz, Shoshana Emanuel, Rahm Emanuel, Ariel Emanuel, Ezekiel Emanuel, Zita Lazar, Cleo Brodsky, Frank Brodsky, Teddy Brodsky, Gary Brodsky (of blessed memory) and Anne Brodsky.

Beverly passed away peacefully on April 13th. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and the caretaker of many spoiled and much-loved dogs. She was ambitious and quick-witted, and valued her career as a specialist in Cardiac Ultrasound. She was a published author in her field of research, and she also wrote a mystery novel (and read many hundreds of mystery novels). Her friends admired her unique perspective and her sense of humor. She will be greatly missed.

Graveside service Monday, 11:30 AM at Shalom Memorial Park (Section II Makhpela), 1700 W. Rand Rd., Arlington Heights, IL 60004. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Misericordia, www.misericordia.com or the American Heart Association, www.heart.org. My family was close with the Adler family when I was growing up. I played with Michael who was my age, but Beverly was 4 years younger so we were not very interested in playing with her.

Bev and I attended Roosevelt High School together. She played the tuba in the band and for one concert I played the cymbals.. A group of us would get together on Saturday nights and listen to the Midnight Special on WFMT. After high school she attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and I stayed in the city. She and Les got married and I left Illinois to go to school in Arizona. I remember getting together with Bev and seeing Shanti when she was a few months old. We stayed in touch sporadically.
The last time I saw Bev was when she came to California where I now live for a conference. We went to Muir Woods and out to dinner. We discussed mystery books and how we both disliked the books in which the protagonist has a boyfriend in the FBI, sheriff's office, Secret Service... She told me she had written a mystery but I didn't get any details.
Bev touched many lives and she made my life richer.

Beverly, born three days after me, was my very first friend. We met in kindergarten. We went through grade school and high school together, took French classes from fourth grade on and spent many happy hours in Horner Park Day Camp.

Recently we had made many plans. To have our nails done, our hair done, go to the Botanic Gardens together.

The last time we had Lou Malnati’s pizza ttogether we planned to return to our music lessons. We were always there children of kindergarten when together. No filters, no inhibitions, just pure love and trust . My joy was to sing to her at her bedside. She works C smile afterwards and I asked if she would like to hear another dong: she grinned broadly and said “another”. The love we shared is a part of my DNA. Rest in peace my dear friend
