OBITUARY

Elinor Turbov, née Joffe, age 97. Beloved wife of the late Joseph. Beloved companion of the late David Cobb Stockwell. Loving mother of Anne (Alan) Kraus and Jane (Mark Stearns). Loving stepmother of Chris Stockwell (Chris Laubach). Proud grandmother of David Kraus (Angelica Cleveland), Susan Gladden (Nickolas) and Aaron Stearns. Proud step-grandmother of Sam Stockwell Laubach and Harley Stockwell Laubach.

Elinor obtained a BA in Speech and MA in English Literature from Northwestern University. She was a dedicated, creative English teacher for 30 years at Nichols Middle School in Evanston, Illinois, and department head for many years. She touched the lives of her students profoundly. Once retired, she continued to be an active member of her community: contributing to many charities, participating both as an actor and behind the scenes of Winnetka Community Theater, volunteering at the Evanston Hospital gift shop, giving tours as a docent for Chicago Architectural Tours, serving on her condo board, and taking a keen interest in her family and friends. She maintained her sparkling wit and sharp intellect by taking classes at Northwestern University, attending many cultural events, reading voraciously, and traveling extensively.

Ann and Jane, I am saddened to hear of your mother's passing. I have such fond memories of her from Mulford Street and from fellow Evanston teachers. I loved her laugh! My sympathies to you and your families.

I am so very saddened to learn of the passing of this great lady! I met Mrs. Turbov as a 6th grader in her language arts class at Nichols. Even at that young age, I understood that Mrs. Turbov was an excellent and talented teacher. I knew I was in for some serious learning and was exciting for the challenge. Mrs Turbov was a no-nonsense teacher, (which is an important trait when working with often surly, mouthy preadolscent boys!) and most if us more language-oriented girls appreciated that. It was the culture of Mrs. Turbov's class to do our best to reach the high expectations she set for us by putting forth our very best efforts, and she was quick with a witty response that quickly de-fused those foolhardy enough to get mouthy. Those of us well-behaved loved her ability to shut the snarky kids down completely without getting rattled or missing a beat. A few months back, I happened upon a Nichols Alumni website in which the readers were asked "What is one of your favorite memories of Nichols?", and my answer came to me quickly: being taught by Mrs. Turbov. When I posted my answer, my sentiment was quickly echoed by scores of alumni, who had many accolades of their own to add. This was not at all surprising as her love for her profession and regard for her students was abundantly clear to us. I developed a love and appreciation for English over my 3 years at Nichols (1974-1977) while a student of Mrs. Turbov, and that has grown into a passion that continues to this day. I know she had everything to do with that.
I think she would be pleased to know I chose teaching as my profession as well. I often reflected on my experience in Mrs. Turbov's class to serve as a model for my own teaching. I have always regarded her as the quintessential master teacher, and tried my best to follow her example that was so meaningful to my growth and development. It is said that a teacher never really knows where his or her influence stops. If I was able to pass onto my students the desire to aspire to excellence and the love of learning, I will have Mrs. Turbov to thank. What a honorable and profound legacy she has left to all of us us to treasure. I will always remember her in the highest regard and with unbridled appreciation and affection. My condolences to her family and friends.... Mrs Turbov was a remarkable person, and her influence and esteem remain with all she touched!
