OBITUARY

Sylvia Stillman, of Evanston, Illinois, formerly of Chicago, passed away peacefully one week after her 93rd birthday.

Born Sylvia Rotheiser, the daughter of Jennie Kerstein, Sylvia grew up in a Jewish orphanage—an experience that shaped her independence, resilience, and lifelong appreciation for community. She spent much of her adult life in Chicago before later making her home in Evanston.

Sylvia was married to Paul Stillman, who preceded her in death, and with whom she shared an important chapter of her life.

Professionally, Sylvia worked for many years as an office manager for a prominent law firm, where she was respected for her reliability, intelligence, and dedication. In her later years, she continued working as an office assistant, a role she valued for the friendships and sense of purpose it provided.

Sylvia had a deep love of world travel and found great joy in exploring cultures through their food, delighting in virtually every ethnic cuisine. She was also an enthusiastic lover of theater and movies, and a devoted fan of Michael Jordan during his legendary playing years. Until she was no longer able, she loved driving around in her cherished Subaru, often wearing hats from the funky sixties and her signature oversized glasses.

She was unfailingly kind and remarkably sweet, with never an unkind word to say about her fellow human beings.

In her later years, she was lovingly cared for with devotion and kindness by her caregivers, Sheri and Lola, whose compassion brought her comfort and companionship.

She will be deeply missed by nieces Dawn Sullivan and Jeni Nudell (Corcoran), nephews Mark Brines and Mayer Nudell, and her dear friends Denise Chodl and David Perry.

Aunt Sylvia has been a very influential person in my life over the past 50 years. I always looked forward to seeing her at family gatherings and enjoyed our many visits in Evanston and in downtown Chicago where she loved to spend so much of her time. She delighted in our daughter Maria Elena. She always made both of us feel loved and treasured. I will miss her deeply.

Sylvia and I have been friends for over 50 years through all the good times and bad times. I will always remember all the great vacations we had together especially our 14-day Mediterranean cruise and, of course, we loved our time in California visiting with Patches and taking care of his dog while he was on a trip. Those are the memories I will cherish for the rest of my life. We loved going to great restaurants, going to the opera, walking along Lake Michigan in the summer evenings. I could go on and on about all the good times we had together. Sylvia was always with me for all holidays and she was a member of my family. She will be forever missed by all of them. I will be eternally grateful for having her in my life. She will be in my prayers always and now God has a new angel.
