OBITUARY

Alan David Hoffenberg, Age 83.

Loving father of Stacey (Tim) Murphy and Michael (Laura) Hoffenberg. Proud Papa of Kennedy, Keira, and Nora. Cherished brother of Bruce (Denise) Hoffenberg and the late Honorable Judge Earl Hoffenberg (Helen Hoffenberg). “Tremendous” uncle, cousin, and friend to many.

A pioneer in the field of family law, Alan was widely respected not only for his legal acumen, but also for his deep empathy and advocacy for families navigating life’s most difficult transitions. Over a decades-long career, he mentored countless attorneys, served as the President of the American Academy of Matrimonial Attorneys, and helped shape the landscape of matrimonial law across the country.

Outside the courtroom, Alan found joy in life’s simple pleasures—casting a line on a quiet lake, spending time on the golf course, or gathering with friends for a good game of poker. A true food lover, there wasn’t a cuisine that deemed unsatisfactory. But above all, he cherished time with friends and family. His greatest happiness came from the laughter, love, and connection shared with those closest to him. A man who had a true hunger for life, food, fishing, and family.

Service Friday 12 Noon at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd (at Niles Center Road), Skokie. Interment Zion Gardens Cemetery. My entire family is so so sorry about Alan. We met years ago through our son's friendship growing up with Michael. We all became fast friends from the start. Such good times we had at their pool and just being able to enjoy life with Al and Donna. It was a very special time for us. His late brother Earl and Helen were almost always included. Love to Michael and Stacey and the entire Hoffenberg family. Unfortunately Natalie and I won't be at the funeral as we are out of town. May his memory be a blessing.

Al was a mensch. Always smiling and engaging in conversation. His presence was surely felt. Never one to stay in the background and often verbose, life was his courtroom. He will be missed. Deepest condolences to his entire family. May his memory be a blessing.

Alan and I went to John Marshall Law School. We would see each other occasionally. I know that Alan was a fisherman and I recently called his office to ask him if he wanted to fishing with me. I found out that he was in North Shore Place. I spoke to his brother, Bruce. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see him before he passed away. My condolences to the the entire family..was passing is not only a loss to his family but to everyone that knew him.

When I lived in Illinois I needed a sharp attorney that could understand a complex family situation and Alan was able to help me and later direct me to Peter Segal and Paul Franciszkowicz . I did not know Alan well, but from my encounters with him, he had a heart. It is not easy to take in people's life complexities and see where justice could be served. That takes life experience and emotional intelligence above legal expertise. I am very grateful to Alan, may he rest in peace.
