OBITUARY

Melvin Richard Loeb, 81, of Chicago and formerly of River Forest, Illinois, after a long illness.
Son of Sally and Bill Loeb, Mel was born in Albany Park in 1943. A graduate and great supporter of Roosevelt University, Mel had a long career as a stockbroker. He had a prodigious memory and a keen sense of humor. He was a reliable source of the acerbic joke, the shaggy dog and the punny story. Mel was survived by many loving cousins and beloved by many friends. He was generous to a fault, active in his synagogue life, and in retirement Mel was an active patron of the arts and a long-time volunteer at the Art Institute. He loved music, books, art, the CSO, the Lyric, the Goodman Theater, Mandel Hall, and so much more.

Service Tuesday, 11:30AM at Oak Park Temple B’nai Abraham Zion, 1235 North Harlem Avenue, Oak Park, IL. Interment Westlawn. Donations in Mel’s memory and in lieu of flowers are welcomed to Oak Park Temple B’nai Abraham Zion, 1235 North Harlem Avenue, Oak Park, IL 60302, www.oakparktemple.org and the Self Help Home, 908 W Argyle St, Chicago, IL 60640, www.selfhelphome.org. I'm so honored to had the opportunity to meet and get to know Melvin. Melvin really enjoyed watching sports especially, The Cubs!!! Melvin and I watched a few games together. I wondered what Melvin thoughts would be about The Bear's ? May you rest in peace Melvin. From your Caregiver, Lisa.

We knew Mel in high school and beyond. He stood up at our wedding. We would see him at Oak Park Temple where he would enjoy coming to Yiddish activities. It always interesting to talk to Mel and catch up on old times. We are sorry to hear of his passing.

Oh, Mel, We have already missed the time we used to share with you, before your illness. Mel was David's friend before I met him and he introduced me to Mel the first time I visited Chicago, when I was 19. The information shared here about his involvement with the temple and with the many types of culture that our wonderful city offers is absolutely true. An important facet of Mel's existence has been omitted. He was an enthusiastic foodie. He would try new restaurants in Chicago and in other cities. Before his illness he also styled himself a flaneur. He especially enjoyed walking in Paris, pausing to rest at the occasional cafe. Most of all, Mel was a faithful friend. We will hold him in our hearts as one of the dearest people we have ever known. Thank you for that, Mel.

Love, Ann Raven and David Edelberg
