OBITUARY
Edward Irwin Rappaport, 90.
Born December 10, 1933. Died August 2, 2024.
Devoted husband to his best friend forever, Evelyn (nee Hely) Rappaport. Loving father of Trudy (Steve) Sirkis, Fern (Manny) Katz, and Sol (Bella) Rappaport and the late Gerald (Nancy) Rappaport. Grandfather of Laurel (DJ) Olszewski, Dan (Jen Yokoyama) Sirkis, Nathan Katz, Becca (Jeff) Lieberthal, Alec Fischer, Kayleigh (Alex) Tick, Jillian Katz, Tali (Alan) Dukor, Jori (Josh) Zepeda, Erik Fischer, Emily (Jack) Rabenn, Ben (Cassidy Bannon) Rappaport. Great Grandfather of Henry, Truman, Leo, Judah and Evan. Dear Uncle Eddie of Steven (Craig Sigele) Marton, Mindy (Chris) Grall, Gary (Kim) Marton and Sabine Hely. Preceded in death by his son, Gerald, his sister, Barbara (nee Rappaport) Marton and his parents Nathan and Jeanette (nee Solomon) Rappaport. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
Edward was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Jeanette (nee Solomon) and Nathan Rappaport. He moved at the age of 10 with his parents and younger sister, Barbara, to Chicago, Illinois. He survived polio in 1947. He was a founding member of David Marcus AZA in Chicago.
In 1953 at the age of 19, Edward met the love of his life, Evelyn Hely, and they were married on January 30, 1955. They were married for 69 years.
Shortly after they were married, they moved to Park Forest, Illinois, where they were founding members of South Suburban Synagogue (now called Shir Tikvah) and remained members there still today. He was a trustee of the synagogue for many years.
Edward began his career as a stock boy when he was a freshman in college and worked his way up to eventually become the first non-family president of the company. He worked at that company from the time he was 19 until his retirement at age 65, when the company was sold. Edward was always known to be loyal, hardworking and highly ethical. While he worked, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Depaul University.
Edward took up golfing at the age of 29 and that became a second love of his life. He was an avid golfer until only two years ago. He had his first (of three) holes-in-one on the 17th hole on May 11, 2004.
In retirement, Edward found great pleasure in volunteering with second graders to assist them in reading and math and in serving as a Cook County court watchers officer. But his real pleasure was spending time with his grandchildren. He attended their soccer games, dance performances, school activities and more.
Edward lived 90 wonderful years with a wonderful family. Not Bad.
