OBITUARY

Emily Kathryn Vogel, age 70, beloved mother of Nathan Jordan, Meredith (Dane) Bolinger, and Clare (Sarah Ollila) Rowland. Loving grandmother of Beatrice Bolinger. Dear sister of Mitchell (Claudia) Vogel, Bradley Vogel, Douglas (Lynelle) Vogel, Jane Vogel, and Stuart Vogel. Fond aunt of many. She was preceded in death by her father Mitchell Julian Vogel and her mother Emily Mauzy Vogel. Emily grew up in Plainfield, Indiana, as the oldest of six children. She graduated from Plainfield Jr.-Sr. High School in 1970. She was a cheerleader for varsity sports all four years. She had many friendships in high school, and she cherished those friendships throughout her life. She started her career as a Licensed Nurse Practitioner through Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and then earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and chemistry from Valparaiso University. Emily spent her life caring about other people, as a nurse, a pharmaceutical sales representative, a realtor, and an aging services professional. She was a talented seamstress and a huge Cubs fan, but she loved nothing more than visiting her adult children across the country. She was an avid supporter of the arts, as a patron of the ballet, the symphony, and the Art Institute of Chicago, and as a docent at the Terra Museum of American Art. She was an active member of the Chicago Sinai Congregation. She will be dearly missed by many extended family and friends. Memorial service Friday, 11 AM at Chicago Sinai Congregation, 15 West Delaware Plc., Chicago, IL 60610. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chicago Sinai Congregation, www.chicagosinai.org or the Joffrey Ballet, www.joffrey.org/donate. Dear Meredith, Clare, and Nathan,
Your mom and I were good friends through junior high and high school. We spent lots of time together cheerleading, sleepovers, and just enjoying life together. We also stayed in contact after with phone calls and even some in person visits. Do you remember when your mom brought the 3 of you to Florida to visit my family? I will always remember that as I will always have a very special place in my heart for your mom. Although I won't be able to attend the funeral, I will be with you all in heart and soul.
With love, Cindy and Bud Shrum

Dear Family and Friends of Emily,
Ron and I were Emily's downstairs neighbors for more than 25 years. She was the best neighbor ever. She was kind, considerate, thoughtful, and a caring person. We had many great conversations going up and down our back stairway. After her retirement a couple years ago, she happily immersed herself in her family and the Sinai congregation. We will miss her immensely

Dear children of Emily, I had the pleasure of working with your Mom for several years at Westminster Place and attending the ballet a number of times with her over the years. She was so dedicated to her clients and their families while they sought new homes. Their gratitude was often evidenced by thank you gifts of plants, pottery, homemade cookies, and frames to hold pictures of all of you. Everyone would come by to see the latest photo of Bea, which she proudly posted on her office door along with the latest adorable story of what she was up to. Emily seemed happiest when planning her next trip to see each of you--bonus when it could be two or more of you in the same trip! She always said it felt like a holiday when you were together.
Your Mom was a caring co-worker and friend whom I will miss dearly. I hope your own good memories of her will be a comfort to you in the days ahead. Please know you are in my prayers.
Fondly,
Barbara Moriarty

I just spoke with Emily a few weeks ago when she drove all the way back up to Westminster Place (WP) in Evanston to attend a farewell party for another staff person. Emily was a person who cared about people and wasn't afraid to show it. I loved talking with Emily during her many years as a marketing salesperson at WP. When she retired, I thought, "Who will fill her shoes?" as she was so successful in helping elderly people to make decisions about their future. She did it with love and respect, and she was respected and loved in return. I am an 87-year-old resident of Westminster Place, and I miss Emily who still had so much to live for.

Dear Emily's family:
Emily was such a wonderful neighbor. Always greeting with a friendly smile and inquiring about how we are doing every time we saw each other. A very caring person. We share your grief and will miss her.

Dear Meredith, Claire, Nathan and Little Bea,
I had the honor of working with Emily from the day she started at Westminster to the day she retired. She was our ray of sunshine with the most positive attitude of anyone I know. Her glass was not half full, it was overflowing and she spread that positivity to all those around her. You could not have a chat with her without hearing the latest accomplishments or seeing a recent picture of Baby Bea; what a proud grandma and rightfully so! She lived for her family and I can tell you that she spoke of each and every one of you often and with love. When she retired it left a gaping hole in our team but I was fortunate enough to be counted amongst her friends and saw how happy she became planning her new condo move and just enjoying life. To say she will be missed is an understatement. She will always be with us in our hearts.

Dear Meredith, Clare, and Nathan,

My deepest condolences on the loss of your mother, Emily. She and I were former colleagues at Westminster Place, as well as we were friends. Simply put, your mother was lovely. In our spare time at the office she would talk about all of you and your lives, and of course her precious Beatrice. I will always remember the encouragement and support she offered residents and employees during the height of the pandemic. She was excellent in her work, and cared incredibly for those she served. Emily was funny, and Barbara and Lisa and I were often bent over laughing through the stories she would tell. I don't mention these things as if you hadn't a clue about her, but I wanted you to know that she was a special person in my life, and that she touched so many people. I will be forever grateful for knowing her, and may she receive everlasting peace. Peace to all of you as walk through this time.

Dear Nathan, Meredith and Claire,

Joining you by livestream for your dear Mother's funeral was a great privilege for me. Through the years that Emily was a member of Sinai under my watch, her presence, spirit and dedication were always such a source of inspiration for me personally. As you may recall, we were very close friends, and it has been an enduring regret for me that we lost touch over time and distance. Every word spoken in tribute to her today rang so true- and evoked many warm memories.
I will continue to hold her and all of you in my heart and in my prayers.
With love,
Howard Berman
