Gayla was always my “special cousin in America”. Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s in impoverished Israel, Cousin Rose would send Gayla’s used cloths for me, and I cherished the “fancy American look”. I even wore Gayla’s snow suit - in Israel… I have always felt that Gayla was my kindred spirit. When I came to America, as a student, Gayla and her entire family “adopted” me and cared for me. I feel much gratitude to Gayla for always projecting warmth and love towards me. I will truly miss you, my sweet cousin Gayla. Rest in peace.

Gayla was a true friend and will be missed. She was a very intelligent and knowledgeable person . She always knew about places to visit in Florida and what the best places to travel to. She loved going on cruises, shopping for clothes, reading books, playing mahjong, entertaining at her home, and helping others.
Howard & I enjoyed Gayla & Michael’s friendship. We have wonderful memories of our trip to Cuba, dining out, and sharing Shabbat meals.
We send our sincere condolences to the family.

I met Gayla my first evening in Chicago when I was nearly 12 years old and she was 10. The movers had not yet brought our belongings from our birthplace, the small town of McKeesport, PA to the big city of Chicago, so with my parents and younger siblings, I spent the night with the Levinsons. Gayla shared her room with me and that night's chatting session was the first of many shared moments. As adolescents we attended many family events together, though more often in the decades that followed we shared our thoughts from a distance. One of the last times Gayla and I spent together was some 6 years ago when Gayla and Michael hosted me, my daughter and granddaughter in their home in Florida for a week. Gayla was so considerate and caring of each one's needs! Unforgettable hospitality! The very last shared family event was in 2018, at the "Women of Hersh Heritage" Roots Tour that Gayla helped Kay arrange in the Pittsburgh - McKeesport area. The tour culminated in the cemetery where many of the first generation of our mutual American relatives had been laid to rest, along with Katy Herskowitz, the biological grandmother of Gayla and Kay. May Gayla rest in peace and her memory be a blessing.
